Are the EGR and Cat. converters being installed on the 2004's or does it come out later in the year (like 2004. 5)? I am thinking of either ordering a new truck (preferred method) or finding one as close to what I want as possible. The determining factor will be the start date of the added emission devices. I would rather have a 2003 that was "close" to what I want and has no EGR or Cat. than to order a "perfect" 2004 and have the additional anti-pollution garbage.

Does anyone know when the start date of the EGR/ Cat. is? If I do order a 2004 model now, will it have the devices?

I plan to buy 3500 DRW 6-speed HO 4x4 quad door.

Thanks for the help.

John

Well, from what's been posted on here, the 04s that are out so far have no EGR. They have the same engine as the 03.

Anyone who knows FOR SURE, Please let me know. I am interested in purchasing or ordering a truck in the next few days. It is my understanding that the trucks built this year as a 2004 model will only have to meet this year's emissions rules... makes sense, but I want to make certain before I order one. I DEFINATELY don't want a EGR/Cat. equipped one, but I wnat/need a new truck. Dealers don't know #$%& about those details, so I appreciate any help yall can offer.

Thanks, John

Only trucks built after Jan 1, 2004 have to meet new EPA standards. 2004 trucks built before that date have the same configuration as 2003. Order now if you don't want EGR.

Thanks for the info, Jeff. Sounds like you are ordering about the same truck as I have now decided to order: 2004 3500 4x4 HO 6-sp 4-door. I am going to add the "extras" as necessary without getting the alarm system, leather or push button transfer case.

2003 Rams have catalytic converters in the several states that have California type emissions. The engine is rated 235 hp in those states.

I was also on the fence until reports from dealers that have gotten 04s that have no EGR, and a few that have gotten their ordered trucks already. Placed my order yesterday!

For those with 03s who have taken their mufflers off... is there a fine screen on the inlet or outlet of it? My cousin says he heard they have a screen made from a catylist material incorporated into the muffler. Is this true?

Are you sure? Greg. I swear my CA 03 has the exact same cat that my CA 95 had. That one was hanging on the walll and I know exactly what it looked like and I am sure that bulge on my 03 looks the same. Or what is that thing down there? :confused:

EGR ???

OK Fellas;

What is EGR? Exhaust Gas WHAT? Can it be deleted, without messing up the computer? Can it be bypassed? Can it be removed? I am concerned, as I have not placed my order yet. :eek: :eek:

Exhaust Gas Recirculation. it is an evil device that injects a small amount of exhaust gasses into the incoming intake air charge to "dilute" the oxygen content on the air charge to lower the combustion tempratures to a point where oxides of nitrogen [NOX] are greatly reduced. it is only suppose to operate at light load. useless old antique device that has no place on a modern engine of any kind imho...

I don't think it can be bypassed or disconnected, legally or operationally. On the bright side, this is common on the big rigs already. I ordered some fire engines last year, and they had the Detroit Series 60 with EGR. We could not get them without EGR, even then. No operational problems were noticed by the firefighters, and Detroit provided the same warranty as before on the engines.

EGR EFFECT

OK ;

We have concluded that it is a vile -evil -worthless thing. Is there a possibility that it will reduce the economy ( mpg) ?

I guess that I am wondering what detrimental effect it will have, other than something else that could fowl up. :confused:

I don't know how the EGR system is designed or whether it can be bypassed or not, but as stated, it serves the purpose of reducing oxides of nitrogen (NOX). NOX is created by high combustion chamber temperatures. Adding exhaust gasses to the intake displaces oxygen, lowering combustion temperatures. Displacing oxygen is also totally stupid as it diminishes the efficiency of the engine, causing the engine to make less power and increases pollution by causing more unburned fuel exiting the exhaust, as well as higher fuel consumption. We use turbos to put more air (O2) into the engine and the EGR counters that by reducing the amount of O2 in the combustion. Air only has about 20% oxygen to begin with.

In reality, NOX is a problem only in very few areas of the world, one being Los Angeles, California. Its unique location between the mountains and salty ocean promotes a reaction between NOX, ocean air and sunlight, causing smog. It is not a problem in most of the rest of America.

No screen, however, the inside of the muffler was reduced down to 2. 75"!!! So much for the 4" exhaust. I put on a 3. 5" resonator (which is what the pipe is muffler forward) and it sounds great! I can definately feel an improvement in acceleration. :D
