If you un-plug it, you get P0405-egr Position Sensor Circuit Low. If somebody knows what the pin-out of the connector is they probably could jumper a couple of pins and not get the code. Does anybody know what the pin-out is?



Next question, what is the cheapest method to be able to reset codes? I know the Edge Insight will do it but is there anything cheaper?

Looking at a troubleshooting tree from my local dealer, there are 8 pins to the EGR valve, pin #1 is the 5V supply, pins 6,7,8 are control, pin 5 is the ground, and pins 2,3,4 are signal. Not sure how the heck to jump these? I know if you jump the control or the signal to voltage or ground you should get additional codes.
 
If you removed the motor portion and made a cap off plate you could leave the motor plugged in. I'm not saying this is something you should do, but it should keep the CEL off for a while, at least until the O2's figure out the EGR isn't working.

Go to autozone. If you leave it unplugged it comes back immediatly(sp). If you plug it back in it will go off after five key starts I think. I have had mine unplugged awhile now.
 
On both gas and diesel engines the engine controller watches the O2 response to verify EGR operation. Otherwise it does not know if the valve is really opening or not. It is usually one of the emissions monitors so it might take a while for it to catch the problem.
 
Does anybody know if the EGR control is a stepper motor or is it a dc motor with potentiometers?



The EGR valve motor (actuator) is a three-phase, brushless DC motor controlled by the ECM. The motor assembly also contains three Hall-effect sensors that detect EGR valve position.

EGR is active at low load and speed ranges. Control of EGR flow is based on engine load and engine speed. The ECM (Engine Control Module) gathers information from engine input sensors, and after evaluating the input signals, uses a stored performance map to operate the EGR Valve Actuator (2) and EGR Airflow Throttle Control Valve (3). The calculation allows for a precise EGR flow rate

When you look at all the DTC's and the way the egr is monitored you can get a better idea of just how sophisticated the system is. IRRC there are at least 8 dtc's for the egr system alone.
 
What would happen if you disconnected the EGR motor from the valve? I believe it can be done easily and you would be able to hook back up the connector and not get any codes.
 
I just to the egr valve assembly to look and see what position the valve is(open or closed). I believe the controller that the egr connector plugs into is solenoid based. Not exactly sure why there are three coils but suspect it could be three seperate positions. The valve is not a butterfly type but is spring loaded closed and is pushed on to open. Just my conclusions.

I don't understand. What is a 'three-phase' DC motor. 'Phases' usually apply to AC motors.
 
Does my 2006 have an EGR valve? I can't find an EGR valve when scanning through my 2006 shop manual... but then maybe it wouldn't be there. . maybe it is a Cummins thing?
