While operating off-highway (track only) with my 49 state (non EGR) intake I have noticed that under high boost conditions the EGR valve opens coating the outside of the intake with soot. (The egr apparatus is still attached to the exhaust manifold, not the intake). How much boost am I losing? Will I see a signifigant performance improvement by blocking the EGR off completely? (it makes an unpleasant flapping sound but only under 25+ lbs boost) I still get 32psi at max throttle according to my westach guage.

If you have the EGR still in place but not attached to the intake horn, and you are using the federal intake horn with out the EGR port, you won't loose any boost. Boost is only on the intake side. If the EGR opens and allows an exhaust leak it will just make noise it will not affect boost. I suppose it could start a fire or melt something.

Why not block off the crossover pipe at the manifold and remove the EGR completely? Those cross over pipes are UGLY and they have a nasty habit of breaking because of the exhaust heat and pressure especially if you have an exhaust brake. All federal models Ive looked at have the electrical connector at the EGR location but it's not attached to anything and it is just tucked up under the horn.

egr silliness

I just thought that if the driven side of the turbo sprung leak (via an open egr valve) it would reduce the amount of pressure drivingthe turbo. (I dont have the tools to make a block-off plate)

Call Jerry at Mag Hitec. They make the covers for the exhaust manifold and they are very reasonably priced. 818-786-8325
