EGR service delayed?

Before leaving for Florida, I did the "67,500 Filter, EGR Valve Cleaning and Cooler". While traveling the CEL came on and I had it checked at a Dodge dealer. The codes were PO131 and P2A00. Once in Daytona Beach, Florida, I had the sensor fixed. They told me I also had to replace the EGR Valve, Code PO405. The cost would be $1,474 plus tax. I refused the Valve replacement. Why would I have to replace the EGR Valve after I cleaned it less than 1,000 miles ago? If I have to replace the valve, am I stuck with having to purchase this replacement at the dealer for almost $800 plus the labor, or can I purchase from another place? I will be leaving Daytona the 1st of December to return to Georgia and am not sure what to do. It seems I have 3 options: #1Unplug the EGR Value. What will happen? Some truck have no problems; others do. #2 Wait until I get home and clean the Value. How long can I run the truck like it is? #3 Bite-the-bullet and have the Dealer replace? Also, I can't clear "Perform Service" with pedal. Is this because of the CEL on?

Thanks All in advance,

Ron

Did you do the cleaning personally, or have a dealership do it?

If you unplug the valve you get a CEL, but engine operation is not effected (as reported by many people).

Yes I did the cleaning, some post's have said there truck went into limp mode, most like you said, had no trouble.
Thanks for getting back so soon! I have limited access to wifi and will check the replies off and on.

Update: CEL went out, guess it needed a number of cycles. Glad I didn't spend the big buck's at the Dodge shop, although I still can't clear "Perform Sevice" with the 3 pedal trick, could do it when "oil change" came on, but this is located on the "lie -o- meter"

Perform Service will be displayed on the overhead console of
your vehicle if the CCV filter, EGR Valve and EGR Cooler
is due for required maintenance.

I know you did the EGR stuff, did you replace the CCV filter?

Anyhow, here is how you reset it.

PERFORM SERVICE INDICATOR- RESET the “Perform Service” message will display on the EVIC each time you turn the ignition switch to the ON/RUN position to indicate emission maintenance is required. To reset the “Perform Service” indicator system (after performing the scheduled maintenance) refer to the following procedure:
1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (Do not start engine).
2. Press and release the brake pedal two times.
3. Fully depress the accelerator pedal slowly two times within 10 seconds.
4. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF/LOCK position.
NOTE: if the indicator message illumination when you start the vehicle, the “Perform Service” indicator did not reset. If necessary repeat this procedure.

To reset the “change oil” message on the EVIC, Turn the key to run without starting the engine and press the accelerator pedal 3 times within 10 seconds.

If you have been attempting to reset it with the 3 pedal trick then a word of caution, your ECM thinks the oil has been changed even if you didn't.

Yes, I did everything, got Geno's kit and did the reset as you stated, will not clear and now the CEL came back on, back to square 1. What do I do now folk's?

Sorry to get back so late Jim but just getting Wi-Fi here at the campground. As I stated in first thread I'm getting PO405 EGR Sensor A Circuit Low.

Thanks,ron

Ron,
One of the connectors could be loose or the wire pulled out of the pin if you did the cleaning correctly. Re check the wiring and see if it happens to be loose wire or a connector in the EGR circuit. Then do PERFORM SERVICE INDICATOR- RESET again. If this doesn't correct it you may have an issue with a sensor that has failed.

Just my humble opinion,

Jim W.

Jim, your opinion is humbly appreciated. Funny you mentioned the connector, the Dodge shop broke the locking tab and I had to zip tie it. I pulled up the PO405 code on OBD-CODES.com by Dale Toalston and said to check for 5 volts reference circuit, saw at least three. Did not have a wiring diagram. Cannot clear the Perform Service, what sensor would fail? I only have this one code.

thanks,ron

First off I would see if you could buy the connector that was damaged by the local dodge dealer. You may need to buy a tool to remove the wires from the connector and to make sure they are seated in the new connector correctly. I have a link to the Ram Tech Authority Service Information. You will need to buy or pay a onetime fee to access the information that you are looking for. Put in the VIN number and then chose Wiring Diagram for the product type. The Wiring diagram will then show for your truck. I believe there are a couple of sensors in the EGR circuit so it would be hard to pin [point just one without the schematic for your truck.

Here is the link.

Thanks Jim, a friend I used to work with has a garage he uses, can trust them and I will have them check truck. Hope to get something done before I head North. Thanks for all the info. I may be doing some work when I get home, though I will have to work outside.

UPDATE:

I replaced the EGR valve all cleared. Don't know why it was defective. By the way, I found a new in box mopar for half the price that Dodge wanted at AMAZON.
