Hi all. So the EGR valve is usually closed at startup of engine right? When does it actually open? Can you you tell from different sound of the engine? I removed my EGR for cleaning. I tried the solenoid disassembled from the valve but connected to the electric connector, turned the key and it did move like to open the valve. After cleaning the valve and connected only electrically turned the key and nothing happened. I guess it's normal. Anyone can help? This is a ram 2007 6.7 lt. Thanks in advance

The valve opens to control NOx emissions. The conditions that produce NOx are light loads, where there is excess Oxygen, where the Nitrogen and Oxygen combine under high temp/pressure in the combustion chamber.. so it opens and closes often and is throttled at times, depending on the engine loading. I monitored it's position and the computer command position with the Ultragage. I set an alarm for a command vs. position over 20%, since the darn thing is cycling so frequently, and often in lag of the computer command, I got rather tired of hearing the alarm. Stuck open EGRs have been documented to wipe out turbos and cause other serious engine damage. With ultragage, I can monitor for other trouble codes in real time, and it becomes an option to run with the EGR valve electrically unplugged, and shut, which prevents damage from a stuck open valve.
