Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) EGT 200-250deg high

Hi guys,

We went to the camp for memorial day weekend, and as i was going up the same old hills, my EGT was 1100-1300 deg, 200 - 250 deg hotter than normal.

Since I've owned the truck, it's never been that high pulling any load, especially since installing the AFE Mega-Cannon ProFilter 7 and Magna-Flow 4" exhaust from turbo to rear.

So I have an appointment tomorrow morning with my mechanic to pull the radiator, assuming at this point that it's probably plugged. ( or the intercooler ) I figured this was it, as some other indicators are:



Takes longer than normal to cool down to 300deg.

A/C seems to be warmer than normal, and this was just repaired 2 weeks ago.



The questions here are:



Am I on the right track, based on previous similar reported problems such as this?



Can the intercooler be plugged on the inside somehow?

might be coated/caked w/ oil/dust/sludge from the overflow bottle

Yup, but I don't have a bottle on this model.

Anyhow, the mechanic installed a bottle kit, and cleaned the radiator with some special, high strength solvent, and that seems to have done it.

I'm going to build a gadget that attaches to a high-pressure washer that goes down between the radiators. That's my goal for the next few weeks.

Was your coolant temp gauge reading high. If you touch the upper half and the lower half of the rad very carefully you should be able to tell if it is plugged. The temps would be very different. Or if you have or know someone who has a laser thermometer that would be a lot safer. If you use your hands be careful. HTH
