I have a 96' CTD 3500 TST#5 auto; will either 1/4 or 1/8 npt thermo work; is either better; is either easier to install; are adapters easy to get in either size; and/or why is there two darn sizes?!

I went with the 1/8 NPT on mine, just for the "just in case" reason. That way if the threads ever get damaged, I can step up to a 1/4 NPT

They should both work equally as well... One reason to install the 1/8 probe is that if you make a mistake, and mess up the drilling of the manifold, you could always go to a 1/4 probe and correct the tap. For most people, this shouldn't be a big problem but I suppose it could happen...

thanks, ... any advice on temp probes for transmission? dipstick probes any good?

Get the hot line from a 94/95 that already has a test port where you can install your aftermarket gauge. $80-100 from dodge, gives the hottest readings as it is where the fluid leaves the TC and goes to the heat exchanger. You can put it in the pan but your peak temp will be lower and the gauge will react much slower.

I used a 1/4 npt. If I screw up the threads there are fittings available with 1/4 FNPT on one end and 1/2 MNPT on the other.

Check out www.swagelok.com . SS-8-RB-2 for 1/2-to-1/8 reducing, or SS-8-RB-4 for 1/2-to-1/4 reducing. There is almost always a "fix" with pipe fittings! ;)
