Im installing gauges this weekend I need to know do I have to take turbo off in order to drill and tap the manifold? If so this being my first, what do I need to look for. Where is the best place to plumb in the boost probe? Thanks guys!!!
Its not neccessary to remove the Turbo if your carefull. Use grease on your drill bit and tap to help hold the chips from falling into the manifold, it also helps to lubricate while your drilling. When you finish drilling use a pencil type magnet to stick in the hole to pick up any remaining chips, it works well. Use short turns on the tap, constantly backing out and removing the tap chips. These were the instructions that came with the gages I got from Geno's and they worked very well. The Boost gage will generally reccomend where to install the probe. Just remember to disconnect the hose under the elbow so you don't get any chips left behind in there. Any tiny particles left in the exhaust manifold should fly through the Turbo on the initial start up with no problem.
You dont need to remove the turbo to drill/tap the manifold, just apply some grease to the drill bit to catch the metal shavings, the same goes for the tap. Then use a small thin magnet to remove any chips that had fallen into manifold.
For the boost, I removed a 1/2" pipe plug from the drivers side of the head, just above the fuel filter, and used a bushing that fit the gauge fitting.
