4.5 and up can see a steady 1400 degrees without danger of engine damage.
Not very good advice for a guy who said he is running a tuner. The 04.5-07 can handle higher EGT's with STOCK tuning only, add some timing and those temps are not safe for towing. Despite their higher EGT's the 04.5-07's run cooler cylinder temps so the pistons aren't seeing the heat, the exhaust is. As you add timing the temp moves from the exhaust to the cylinder/piston so a truck with decent timing will run higher cylinder temps at 1250° than stock timing at 1450°, just food for thought.
The 04.5-07's have the weakest and easiest to melt pistons ever used in a 5.9, trying to run stock EGT's with timing is a quick way to melt them.
sounds like I'll be ok doing a quick pass, the injectors are new BBI stage 1 100 hp.Don't have any modes for air flow yet, thinking thats where I will need to go next-suggestions?Thanks for the EGT info.
With a stock turbo and BBi's there isn't much you can do to have full power and good EGT's, that's just way too much fuel for that turbo. I am running BBi Stage 1's with a slightly larger turbo than stock and have my fuel dialed in well below stock and still make 415rwhp and depending on rpm and ambient temp I run out of air for full power around 5-7K feet elevation. Even a Smarty Jr on SW1 will make more power than I am, the HE351 just cannot keep up.
You should really look into custom tuning with UDC, it will allow you to take full advantage of your entire setup. With those injectors you need more timing tuning than SW1 has, but to get that with the box tuner you would have to run more fuel than you are now.. so more heat.
Found the web site have parts on order for trans.Looked at the Banks Techni-cooler package, good price wondering if anyone has used one for 2 years or more.
There isn't an intercooler on the market that will fix your EGT's, the stock one is plenty for your airflow levels. As long as you are moving the IAT's post-intercooler are only going to peak at ~40°F over the ambient temp so even if you get them to ambient temp, nearly impossible, you would only see about 50-60° lower EGT's.
Your options are really a bigger turbo or custom tuning. Water/Meth might work, but I prefer tuning and airflow for towing as the water can run out on a long trip.
UDC with the Smarty Jr is a good setup, one step higher would be selling the Jr for an SO6 and getting UDC with the S06 for better rail pressure mapping.
I would change your tuning up a little thou. SW1 TM2 TQ1 PoD90. The PoD at 75 will not effect your mid range fuel/torque but it will effect how your transmission shifts. I don't recommend PoD below 90 for auto transmissions. I have dyno'd the Smarty Jr and at PoD70 the hp/tq was the same as PoD99 up thru about 2300 rpms.
The Home Depot CAI is a good mod, as is a Airaid MIT, and a intake horn (I like the Glacier). None of them will do a lot in terms of EGT's with your setup, but they will help most at altitude on throttle response and mid range airflow..
General rule of thumb for EGT's on the current SJR tuning TM2.
1250° continuous, 1300° momentary
