I just received a Westach combo gauge (Boost & EGT) from Geno's. Now I need to decide whether to read the EGT pre-turbo or post-turbo.

Any suggestions? Which do you measure?

Please note that I am not a mechanic and don't know the significance of the temperatures or Boost pressures that the meter will display. However, I do like gadgets and I know that Boost and EGT are popular items to measure and display. I will ask someone else to install the gauge and wiring. Please help me decide where to measure the EGT.

BTW, after the gauge is installed, I hope you folks will humor me again and inform me as to what Boost Pressures and EGT temperatures are desired and what are bad.

Do you want to turn up the power, or are you going to remain close to stock?

If you plan for some HP, go pre-turbo, if not, post-turbo will help you moniter shut-down temps.

boost should be about 20PSI at WOT. No load, and at idle, boost wil be near 0. say, 2,000RPM and no load, there shouldn't be any significant boost.

EGT, Idle around 300 and WOT no more than 1250*,, that's sunjectable as I know a few people who have hit 1800* and are still runnin'. But, I blew a HG on my 2nd Gen at 1600 and 35-45PSI (not sure, boost was pegged)

Hope this helps,

Hi gbraden,

Most go preturbo because you get the most accurate picture of the exhaust temperatures exiting your engine. In days past there used to be worry of probes failing and getting sucked in but that is unheard of.

The only value I see of a post-turbo reading is for shutting down since it's easier to see how hot the turbo is, but this can be done with a little common sense :)

I have very little common sense so I installed mine post turbo. That's where the big rigs have 'em. My trucks are bone stock so I'm not worried about pre-turbo temps. I shut down at 300*F. :D
