Hey Guys, looking for advice on the EGT probe install for an Edge Juice Attitude package. Installing it on an '03 HO.

The directions show and describe drilling and tapping the exhaust manifold and then running the engine at idle for 10-15 seconds to clear the shavings.

Is there any worry about the shavings going through the turbo as opposed to out the exhaust?

When I did the probe install on my '97 years ago, I remember everbody talking about disconnecting the turbo housing to clean out the shavings to prevent damage.

Is this concern still relevant.

Thanks, Greg

When I drilled and tapped mine, truck was running and a friend was holding a 1x6 over the tailpipe. Drill for a few seconds, then clean and re-grease the bit. Same for tap. 50k miles later, no problems.

Best of luck.
Andy

So the shavings will just blow on out and not mess anything up? 50k miles of evidence is pretty good I guess. I thought even at idle the turbo was still spinning pretty fast, so wouldn't the shavings do some minor damage at least?

I'm not calling you guys liers or anything, I'm just worried and trying to get myself over that hump I guess to go ahead and do it cause I don't feel like taking everything apart to catch shavings. Unless it isn't to involved to do that, I havn't looked really, just glanced at where they say to put it and thought, if I have to take that all apart I'll never get it done.

I've done two of my own and both times I left everything together. I set the shop-vac up so it can suck while I'm drilling the hole. After drilling I just put the hose as tight to the hole as I can. Then grab a magnet and get the rest. Anything that may be left behind won't cause any damage. No need to have the engine running, just more noise and spinning fanblades to worry about. I'd be more worried about hitting the webbing than screwing up the turbo. If you put the probe where pics on this site show you to, that isn't a problem either.

Now... QUIT BEING SUCH A WORRY WART...

I'm just worried and trying to get myself over that hump

... and git 'er done!!!! :D ;)

Drill and tap with the motor shut down. As you fire it up any small shavings will blow through the turbo as it starts to spool up.
