Archived egt probe wire too short

I'm in the middle of installing autometer gauges. I drilled and tapped for the EGT probe and installed the probe. I'm trying to run the wires up to a over head gauge pod by the rear view and the wires from the probe to the gauge are way too short to run across the firewall, up the driver's a pillar, and over to the gauges. The directions say you can't shorten or extend these wires or the gauge callibration will be off. How has everyone been doing it?

The EGT probe is made of "type K" wire which you cannot lengthen. However, most EGT probes use only 4 feet (or less) of "type K" wire (this is the stiff knarly wire) followed by a section of normal copper wire. if you can find the place in your probe wire where the knarly stuff changes to regular copper wire, then you can have confidence that the latter section (copper) can be lengthened. Just don't disturb the factory "K to copper" transition. pick a place within the copper wire section of your probe (either in the middle of it or the end where the gauge face is) and add a resonable length of copper, making sure to keep track of polarities and colors.

Would it be possible to run the wire up the passenger's side pillar? Just a thought...

I tried to find a spot to pass thru to the passenger side and run up that pillar but could not find a spot. There was way too much insulation on the fire wall and I didn't want to start digging around in it. What I ended up doing was running it along the firewall over the top of the motor and took a short cut through the rubber boot that the steering column passes thru. Then up the pillar and across the head liner. I just barely had enough to do it that way, I mean not even an inch to spare. I was a little nervous there for a while till I figured it out. Otherwise, everything turned out nicely. Thanks for the help.
