What is the best way to drill and tap for a egt probe on a 06 common rail? do u have to remove turbo to keep metal from goin in the turbo? thanks

Use lots of grease on drill bit... . drill then wipe off, more grease and drill until all the way through... then once drilled all the way through... start truck and let idle no acceleration and just let idle and that way the compressor wheel wont spin and it will blow what shavings that did get in there out... . Thats one way of doing it..... I did mine that way and all is fine..... Just my . 02

the turbo wheel is sometimes called the compressor wheel..... So if your just idleing the truck it doesn't build boost idleing there for it shouldn't be spinning at all if minimial...

Just drill and tap it with the truck shut down. Use a little grease if you like right before the drill breaks thru, and a little grease while tapping. The turbo will spin at idle, but when you fire it up, the shavings will blow through. Cast iron is brittle and any little shavings going thru the turbo will break into dust.

After I tapped my hole, I got a small magnet on the end of a stick ( you can buy these at your local auto part store) and stuck in down in there and kept taking all the shavings off with a rag and stuck it back down into the hole until it came out clean. This minimizes the amount that will go down to the turbo, the rest will pass through no probelm. Done it to 3 trucks so far. :) Good luck!

I stuffed a rag in the exhaust pipe, started the truck, and drilled the hole. Didn't take long, I was done. Tapping, I greased the Tap and picked up the shaving with a strong magnet...

I drilled and tapped (using grease) mine while it was running with a rag in the exhaust. Worked great. I also removed the wheel well liner, it is a snap to remove and gives you alot of room to work as well as a straight on shot.
