I am thinking of installing a small PLC into my Ram. One of the ideas I have is to install 7 thermocouples on the exhaust system. This would be one for each cylinder, and one post turbo. I have two questions about this.

1) Any recommendations for the thermocouple probes? (Brand, model, size, reasons, etc)

2) I have never had the stock exhaust manifold off. Is there enough material to tap each runner for 1/8 NPT fittings? If not does anybody know what material the manifold is made from so I can weld in a fitting?

(I know the stock manifolds are prone to cracking and that machining the manifold near the ports may cause this to be more of a problem. )

Since I have a 12v the only thing i can tell you is, that faster the probe reads the shorter the life... . i am on my 3rd this year, ofcourse it would be easy just to turn down the heat a little.

That is one thing that is nice about the PLC it has some diagnostic features including detection of thermocouple burnout or disconnection.

I can set it up to signal a warning if there is a loss of signal that exceeds more than . xx seconds.

I think there are a few people on the board who work on power systems, etc. that use probes on each cylinder. I am hoping that at least one of them chime in and say what those systems are using.

Thee are a few brand names that come to mind and would do the job, but only one that I would use or recommend. That being RacePak, they are an affordable, quality data acquisition manufacturer that many on the drag racing scene are using. They make an array of products that will monitor anything you desire. Look them up at Summit's web site, you will like what you see.
