my directions say to tap only enough threads so that the probe threads in 3. 5 turns by hand. is this what everybody is doing. mine has 1/4 npt (drill 7/16).



they also recommend never seize on threads. i was going to use Teflon tape to seal the threads. is this a bad idea?

If you ever want to remove your thermocouple put neverseize on it. It's more for possibility of removal than sealing.

Teflon starts going away somewhere around 600 F.



Wouldn't matter in this application, but it's worth knowing that as it goes away it turns into a poisonous gas (phosgene, I think).
