I'm new to this forum... Hopefully you guys can give me some advice on where to locate the EGT Thermocouple on the exhaust manifold... I see that TST recommends installing the sending unit in the manifold between the turbo and the head, which makes sense... The part that concerns me is the possibility of shavings from drilling the hole falling into the turbo impeller. I know they're pretty close tolerances in there, and magnetize over time. It looks like a lot of you folks have done the installation... Did you pull off the turbo's to drill the holes? If so, how hard is it R&R the turbo? Thanks!

Welcome to the TDR!! :D

I have never removed a Turbo to drill and tap, and have never had a problem. I use the grease method, where I dip the bit and tap in a heavy bearing grease and clean often. I also drill surrounded by a large rare earth magent and that collects nearly all the shavings. I follow up with a pencil magnet to retrieve any shavings that might have made its way to the inside of the manifold.

Others remove the turbo, and yes, I'll admit that while it is unlikely, there is the possibility of a chip getting into the turbo and causing damage if it is done without removal of the turbo.

As for a good set of instructions and mounting location, check out the link below at Diesel Injection Service:

No need to remove the turbo. Drill the hole right where TST's directions say. Drill most of the way through and clear away the chips. When you feel that you're about to go through put a dab of grease on the drill bit and drill a little more. The chips will stick to the grease. If you get too many chips, clean it off and repeat until you're through. Before you put the thermocouple in fish around in there with a magnet just in case you missed any.

That's the old fashined way. If you have an exhaust brake flip it on and drill with the motor running. 60psi in the manifold will really blow the chips out! I've also heard of people tapeing the exhaust pipe to build pressure in it but I've never tried that. Good luck.
