Here I am

I'm running the following. Any suggetions are welcome.

EGT, Pre-Turbo, max 1250

EGT cool down, before shutdown, 300

transmission, cooler inlet line is being monitored, need suggestions for a safe max temp. .

Thanks in advance

Enjoying the new gauges!!

Doug,

Where is the EGT probe located/ Before or after the turbo? If after, the 1250 is high. see some of the other posts about this.

transmission temp- the cooler the better. Below 200 all the time would be good but probably not practical if you tow much weight. I saw post somewhere that gave the life of transmission fluid at different temps. Doesn't last long at 230, even less at 260. Something like 3000 miles. Maybe someone else will remember seeing this and post the address.

Engine looks good if pre turbo.

Where are you monitoring your transmission temp??

transmission pan will not tell you much except how efficient the cooler is, cooler inlet line will tell you how hot the transmission fluid is.

Op temps

Yes I should have detailed more info. I edited the above as pre-turb and cooler inlet line. When I say I'm running, when I hit these high values is when I start to back out.

I think I'm starting to get the "BUG". I'm looking at exhaust sytems now. Turbo-Back. I'm heading out this next week to Idaho and will be watching these temps like a hawk. I'm wondering if an upgrade to the 4" exhaust will help temper the EGT build ups?

Oh well, I have enough questions to fill a book. One step at a time or I'll run out fuel money!!

Thanks Gents !!

ps,. . Howdy Stan!

Hi Doug!:) -

The only time you should be seeing the high temps is when towing. (or just plain enjoying the sound and power of that new 24 valve!!:D )

The larger exhaust will help with the temps as the air can get through the engine better. Your decision as to muffler, cat, etc. On the first gens, changing the pump timing helps with the EGT's but with the new 24 valve setups, I don't know how all that works.

Keep us posted about the EGT and transmission temps during your trip if you can, would be interested in hearing how things are going.

Have a fun and SAFE trip!!

DMerryman,

Paccool is pretty well right on with transmission temps... .

The newer Ram trannies run generally cooler than the 1st Gen trucks.

230*F is starting to get up into the "shortened life range" for the 2nd Gen trans.

Just to be clear your trans. temp sensor is in the line AFTER all the coolers have done their job, and just before it re-enters the trans right??

Just some thoughts from a 1st Gen guy who listened to Bill K. once or twice... . ;) but you might think about having your 'line pressure' checked/set to around 60psi (I think) to help reduce your internal slippage. ( I believe that 63psi is about max. for the trans. in your truck but check with DTT/Bill K. ) This in turn will help reduce temps a BIT.

Your truck, if under warranty, will have an "acceptable range" for setting that DC should not view as warranty voiding. If you can tweak it up a bit you're generally better off.

paccool -- the post about the transmission temps is on the Mag-Hytec website -- interesting to see how long the transmission does not last under high temps!

My Snake River Run

Well gents, I made my first long pull up to the Snake River area of Oregon and Idaho from the Sac Delta area. I had ambient temps from the morning 80's up to early evening 106 degrees. My transmission ran from ~170 and never got above 185 degrees with speeds of 50 mph to 65 mph. And that was pulling a couple of very good grades as well, +6%. I'm just amazed how well this Cummins pulled!!

My load,. . Wife, Me and two teenagers with full tank of fresh water and all the goodies the wife could pack!! And two ice chests in the bed of the truck. Nothing better than a ICE cold beer while setting up camp!!

I also learned that running "out of over drive" lower my egt's by ~200 degrees, and never really saw that much drop in miles/gallon. [I averaged 12. 69 miles/gallon] I did notice that the engine cooling water temp does rise though. I got up to approx. 195-200 degrees when climbing and not an inch above. On the flats/straights, water temp ran between 185-190.

Egt's. Well I tried to keep them at no more than 1100 degrees while climbing the whole trip. I did hit 1200 a time or two when I was listening to the wife, but backed down to 1100 when I caught it. Otherwise I ran from 800-900 degrees continuosly on the flats. I sure am glad for the pyrometer purchase! I met alot CTD folks on the road without gauges and wondered if they were coaking bearings. Had a couple folks ask what the A-Pillar was all about. Guess I'm learning.

I have to tell you, there's alot of CTD folks out there and friendly they are! After setting up camp, we sort of got together and started to talk CTD and various operating conditions of our units. In every conversation, we seemed to equally share information.

All and All, I am very pleased. "NOW", comes the task of lowering temps all around while maintaining current Hp/Tq and gaining a couple of Horses and TQ. Sounds like fun to me!! I am actually thinking about adding a fuel pressure gauge, adding a manual operated aux trans cooling fan and investigating an increased sized exhaust. With the extra peddle I had climbing, I sure could go for 100-200 degree drop on the EGT. Why is it that I want to climb these mountains at 60 mph and pass foreign made cars that can't climb mountains?? I GOT THE BUG!!!

I do have to mention,. . in the 1200+ miles we traveled not a single Furd nor Heavy Chevy passed us. They were all in Fueling Up!! Oh yeah, I was in the Sacramento Area on I-80, when a Chevy S-10 was pulling a ~20 foot travel tralier that passed me. He must have been doing 70 on a down grade. I guess it made him feel good to pass a CTD. All I could think of, when he passed, was what would happen if he had to stop that S-10 @70?? My conclusion,. . No more S-10!!:p

Well that is all for now,

Happy Motoring!!

When new and stock, our ETH/DEE (Cummins HO/6 speed manual) would hit 1300 degF pre-turbo when pulling our 13,500 lb 5ver up 6-7% grades. We added the BHAF (big honking air filter) and didn't see much difference in maximum EGT.

Then one weekend I added the Edge EZ (with its boost elbow) and the Jardine 4" exhaust system. It's too bad I did both the same weekend because now I don't know which component is responsible for how much drop in EGT.

Nevertheless, after these changes, I can't drive the pre-turbo EGT above 1100 degF. We're running about 30-32 PSIG boost (vs 22 PSIG stock) and gained about 1 MPG, not to mention a bunch more mid-range torque! :D
