A buddy who is not yet a member from around Calgary has a question that I said I would post. Here it goes...

My 92 is stock , with 243,000 km; I recently installed an egt ( Westach, post turbo) and am surprised at how low it reads under normal driving conditions. Most of the time it sits significantly below 600 deg F and the most I've seen is 800 degF. It's often
sitting on the zero mark and yet we all know that the exhaust would give you an aweful
burn if you touched the pipe after running the engine. Does my unit need recalibrating?
What is normal for an unmodified engine? The resistance of the probechecks out OK.

I'd be grateful if you'd post this query.

Regards Tony

I have seen mine (post turbo) up to a little over 800-f while towing, going up a grade, usually stays under 500-f empty, unless accelerating hard. If it reads 0 while running, might need to calibrate. bg

Hi Lil' Dog,

My sensor is also mounted post (after) turbo about 2 1/2" past the flange connection,in the elbow.
On the highway, at normal cruise 60 - 65 mph (100-110Kph) and running empty I read about 425 - 475* with about 4psi boost in OD. Rarely above that under those conditions. On a long pull 7% - 8% grade at WOT I have seen about 825-850* with about 20lbs. boost. That is with a 2000lb. camper and about 800lbs. in a utility trailer behind. I NEVER see 0* while running even idle creeping in traffic it runs 250-275 or so. I read here that for every 1lbs. of boost add 10*F (Approx) if your sensor is post turbo. So for me that would be a high of about 1050*F at WOT.
Hope that helps,,, jump in guys!!

Hi Lil' Dog,

My truck is a 92, 4x4, 5spd, 3. 54 with 235/85/16 XPS Michelin tires with Isspro Pyro & Boost Guages. I took the following readings this morning.
Pyro is pre-turbo.
Truck while cold and before starting: Pyro @ approx. 50 , Boost 2*
At Idle: Pyro @ 300, Boost 2*
With no load on @ 110 Km (flat ground no wind) Pyro @ 600, RPM 1900, Boost @ 3 to 4.

I have had the pyro up to 900, but that is going up some pretty good hills heading towards Whistler with the foot to the floor.

* this is the lowest reading on the boost guage.

Since the pyro readings do not go below 0, then when the truck has not been running for any time the pyro should read the ambient temperature above 0 degrees
Cheers,
Al
