Howdy Yall,

I have a question that I need some input with. I was planning on buying an 03 HO before EGT was implemented, however, due to an unforeseen financial situation, I am forced to wait until next summer at the earliest. Since I will have no choice but to have EGT, I fully intend to wait until Cummins implements Variable Geometry Turbo technology on the ISB until I buy. The Banks Sidewinder has VGT, so the ISB will eventually get it, especially since the new Powerstroke has it and the Duramax will soon get it. I have seen the previous posts with the link to the Cummins video on the larger engines they have with VGT and EGR, but this has been the only info I have come across thus far. My question to you all is this: Have any of you come across concrete evidence that Cummins plans to implement this on the ISBe, and more importantly, when? I have not been able to find anything on the subject, so I decided to use the vast knowledge of the TDR for help.

Thanks,

Adam :D

I highly doubt you'll see variable geometry turbos on the dodge. Myself and several others spoke with a Cummins engineer last fall at the TDR nationals and he said that the variable geometry turbo would ADD $1500 to the cost of the engine package. Since they have other options to add EGR to the engine without VGT and given the cost increase I wouldn't hold your breath. There has also been rumors that they may be able to hit the emissions goals without having to go to an EGR setup - let's hope so.

Wow,

$1500 to each engine! Although, I am sort of disappointed since the VGT on the larger ISX engines looked very interesting. I hope that EGR doesn't need to be incorporated to meet the tier 2 regulations. That would be a great day indeed! Thanks for the reply Steve.

I heard the VGT is already on the 5. 9 for the RV/moterhome applications, but not for the Dodge. If a person is already spending $150K or more on a motorhome, I'm sure they can easily absorb the extra cost of the VGT. But Dodge has to remain competative with Chev and Ford and the extra cost would probably be too big for the average consumer to swallow. Just my opinion.

Garry.

sad thing though, that navistar has the vgt on the vt-365 engine, and that is what ford is using [the 6. 0 liter flowerstroke]

oh well. . now if some aftermarket company would produce hx40v and hx50v turbos for the cummins isbe. ooh, i want a hx50v variable on my cummins dodge when i get it. . can flow at the top end, and spool quickly. . i likie:D:D:D

egr......

I also spoke with a Cummins engineer that came just short of saying there will be no egr come January '04. He said they have found another way to meet emissions that will not require egr, made me promise I would not tell where I heard it from... ... some little bitty bird.....

TDR member "weircummin" has been runnin' a VGT on his truck for a while now... . he likes it a lot. I think his is a 2000 or 2001.

piers..... where are you buddy? we need a vgt for our trucks. if you really want a vgt go buy one and stick it in your truck.

another option would be to learn to weld, buy all the parts for a set of twins, set up a jig and build a set of twins! that is the way to go. you can get all of the parts for a set of twins at less than what you would pay for a vgt. a set of twins will blow the doors off of a vgt anyday also longevity will not be an issue. talk to mark kendrick he will get you all the stuff you need.

well IMO just to say you have twin turbos that just sounds cooler than VGT what in the h@ll is VGT and who cares. twins baby! i looked on internet sounds like the VGT is not even being considered.

Just Curious,

For those posts that talk about buying VGT and installing it yourself, do you buy it directly from Cummins or somewhere else. Second, where would be the best place to look for help/buying a twin turbo setup for the new trucks. Any Info would be appreciated.
