Hi Folks - I am new to the TDR and have just updated my 2002. My truck has 77000 miles on it (I bought it new). I have always been fortunate to have another vehicle - therefore the low miles. It has been a great truck, until the fuel injector pump failed. I did a lot of research before having the original replaced with an Industrial pump and a FASS fuel delivery system. While in the shop, the tech and I discussed gauges and he recommended the Edge with Attitude. I really like the different programs for speed, towing, etc. I do have any experience with the EGT gauge, what is considered normal? Mine normally runs between 500 - 600 degrees with and average boost of around 3-4 lbs. I am now very aware of my fuel pressure, since it was the cause of the VP44 failure! Thanks for the information!

My 12v is usually around 800 and 5lbs boost at 70 mph. I can bury the pyro if don't pay attention due to my mods. Most here would say 1100 -1300 is the max for long periods.

Welcome aboard

Agreed. The diesel tech I work with for some of my mods told me I could run all day at 1250, but no more for sustained periods of time. A temp spike here and there is no problem, just not sustained. However, your egts will change do to how you use the truck. Pulling a hill with my camper on gets me close to the limit quickly. Running on flat ground empty will get me 600-700.

Good luck and welcome!

I agree with the above, I have my alarms for boost set at 30 (when I hit it I back off the throttle) and exhaust gas at 1250, pulling hills with heavy loads I hit the boost but no the exhaust gas (maybe due to my flowmaster), I can pull fuel pressure down to 11, my alarm amounts were set by my mechanic that installed the Juice and he does alot of them, hope this helps

Why are you limiting yourself to 30 lbs of boost? Push that up and use the power you have available up to 1250 on the EGTs. SNOKING

Your VP44 died because Bosch put a brass bore in the advance cylinder of the pump. All of the late 2001's and 2002 got this mistake in engineering. On your 2002 that should have been covered by the 5 or 7/100 warranty. SNOKING

Is it an auto with HY35 or HO with HX35? 30 is more than a HY35 should be putting out. Low 30's for fine with HX35. It has nothing to do with the VP44. SNOKING

I need to do some reading as I don't know the diff. between the HY35 and the HX35, it is an automatic, it's supposed to be the HO, I guess I'm getting my thoughts from reading about the HY35, since I have my Juice I can get it up to about 34 without exceeding the 1250 egt

If it's an automatic, it is not an HO. For the 2001s, all autos and 5-speeds were standard output, and the 6-speeds got the high output.

thanks for the info. , I would assume my Edge is why I can put out more than 30# and that I do need to keep it under 30? Thanks for your help and knowledge. I don't know much about the engines however having owned every year of 2nd gen's, going from an 04' back to an 01' I have become something of a 2nd gen steering expert! again thanks so much for your help and I'll keep it under 30#

Thanks for all the info! I guess I should have mentioned that the numbers I mentioned were without towing and a around 50-60 mph on moderately hilly roads. I can say without question that the truck performs a lot better! Better throttle and shifting, fast and better mileage - I suppose most of this is due to the Edge programmer. Thanks again guys.

The dealer kicked out the warranty - the 02 only had a 3/36 and 5/100 on the Cummins (according to them). I am working on a package to DC to see if I can get them to roll - the warranty book says the Cummins Diesel warranty doesn't begin until the end of the 3/36. Here's to hoping!

Do you have a j-hook on the waste gate? Most Hy35's will not go above the low 20's without a j-hook. SNOKING

That sounds like the 2001 warranty. The 2002's got a 5 or 7 year 100K basic warranty. I think they did not tell you the truth. Did they give you a VIP report that list the warranties? SNOKING

Ok, I found this in an old post:

The dealer did give me a quote indicating that the VIP report showed the warranty out at 5 years. I bought the truck on November 30, 2001 - so I am just shy of 7 years. My interpretation of the warranty is 5 years on the Cummins engine AFTER the 3/36 basic. I have a letter and records, receipts etc. in the mail to DC anyway - I feel they owe me for the VP44 and a lift pump. I think it is worth the effort. I appears to me that there are a lot of 01 and 02's with premature failure of the injection pump.

Thanks to all who have responded about my EGT. I haven't towed any of my trailers since I have an EGT gauge - I am curious how my truck will run under a load. My feeling is that if I can keep the EGT in the 1000* range, I should be safe. Thanks again.

I don't know how to add a link. So go to FAQ for second gen. Read Has DaimlerChrysler Taken You For a Ride? By Thomas. It is outstanding.
