Small Emergency! Looking for a front bumper, and plastic parts!

strange noise and low air flow

Has anyone drilled and tapped a hole in the exhaust elbow for their EGT probe with the elbow still on the engine? I was thinking the chips can't fall anywhere but down the exhaust pipe.
Any thoughts... good or bad idea? Thanks!

Could be done, but why chance it? You can have that elbow off in 5 minutes. Use some "anti sieze" on the bolts when you put it all back togather. I put my thermocouple in the elbow, but I removed the elbow to do it.

Thanks Chad! There is always a "right way" to do things, just trying to keep the fittings factory tight.

Dave, you are right, many people drill and tap their post turbo gauge hole while still installed, the only place the cuttings can go is out the exhaust. Might be a little more room to work if you take it out,but I'm a preturbo person, I never tried and wouldn't know.

I took mine off, and traded it for one that was drilled and tapped. Not terribly difficult, but awkward at times getting to the nuts. Patience paid off and it went in fine.

I also concurr that to drill it while assembled won't hurt, BUT can you get a drill in there at the correct angle???? AND remember to drill off center - Don't drill at 12 o clock on the casting seam (or so I've been told).

I bought my stuff from Scheid Diesel in Illinois and they threw in the drilled and tapped elbow at no charge, just exchange. #ad

I'd love to have the exhaust brake, but soooo many other gooodies on the menu first!

Thanks a bunch guys! You have me wondering whether pre or post turbo location for the probe is best now. I can see the advantages to pre, but don't want to buy a turbo if the probe end decides to let go into the blades.
Anybody had trouble with a pre-turbo installation problem?

Dave,I think if you did a poll you'd find that most folks go preturbo. The main problem I've heard of is having the manifold crack due to overtighting the probe fitting, something that is easy to avoid.

I went post because the thermocouple I had was too long to fit in the manifold. If I had my choice I would put one in each exhaust chamber. If you go post, just add a couple hundred degrees to the temp you get. That will give you a round-a-bout figure to go with. If you just have to know exactly, then jerk that turbo off and get the drill out.

If you get the ISSPRO pyro, it's marked green/yellow/red (and numbered). the colors correspond to post-turbo temps..... they may have another model that's got the colors/numbers correct for Pre-turbo use, but, I don't know... . rm

I like the idea of pre for a true reading at all times. #ad
Now, can I ask just where the proper location should be? Thanks a lot to each of you for your comments. :rolleyes

IllFlem: Hey guy, that link from Diesel Injection Service is a real help. I appreciate your efforts greatly. :) I'll do a little studying and see what I need for new gaskets before I get the wrenches out.

Big D,
Make sure you are using the 1/4 NPT Thermocouple if you drill the 7/16" hole. The 1/8" NPT requires a much smaller bit; I think it is a 23/64. I like the smaller hole personally.

Rich M ; How can the ISSPRO Pyrometer be calibrated for Post turbo temperatures? The readings come from the probe and reflect the temperatures from whatever area it serves, whether pre or post turbo. Please explain!

Tom,what rich was saying is that the color codeing on the gauge is different for a pre or post gauge,i. e. the red danger zone on a post turbo gauge is a lower temp than a preturbo gauge.

I drilled my elbow post turbo. It was no big deal. The one thing I was surprised at was that I had been turning off my engine about 15-30 seconds too soon according to the post turbo readings on the EGT gauge. Now I make sure I idle around a parking lot for a while before parking and shutting off at 350 degrees.
