Acceleration Issues

I bought some property in the mountains of tehachapi california, about 5,000

ft. altitude and so that i can go camping there i also bought a fifth wheel 27. 5 f/er and a ctd 325/600 2500HD truck. well here is the thing, i have to

climb up this kind of steep hill to get there ,my transmission temp light went on and my EGT'S went up close to 1450 deg. i could not let go of the gas because i had to get over the hill otherwise i probably would not make it.

after the transmission light went on and the EGT'S climbed up almost 1450 i drove up about one minute to get to the top of the hill , had it in 2nd gear .

everybody tells me i have enough power with the ctd truck, and i beleive that too. so sould i stop going there or *****WHAT DO YOU THINK ? PLEASE need your input, ideas, suggestions.

by the way my pyrometer is before turbo on exhaust manifold .

Shift down, go slower - but save the engine and transmission until you can get more AIR to the engine! You need more boost to lower EGT - but the transmission better stay in lower ranges to allow higher RPM and less torque load - you WERE in tow-mode, right?

I tow a 23' boat I am estimating the weight with trailer to be around 7K. When my truck was stock I towed it up to a mountain lake, the summit was about 10500' in elevation. I had no problem at all. The egt never went over 1100 and I didn't have to shift it down below 3rd gear. I think that in places it was a 8% grade. I wonder if mabey you should have your truck checked, for what I don't know. I have since modified my truck but I havn't had to tow anything up that steep of a grade. I am taking the boat to the same lake over Memorial Day weekend I'll post if I have any concerns

thanks for your input Donn, i was in 2nd gear on tow/haul position , my boost was

about 35 . i have to admit it is a very steep hill . so may be i should have been in

1st gear .

You need to take a look at the transmission fluid. Make sure it is still red and has not turned brown. If brown, get the transmission serviced ASAP.

How many miles on the truck? Could be a slipping converter as that could increase the transmission temp. Doesn't explain the high EGT's though. What is the weight on the trailer? What did the engine water temp do when all this was going on?

I know from experience that automatics dont like heat!I dont know what temp the light comes on at on your 48re but I got my 47 to 260 and it lost overdrive and tc lockup in one swoop so I slowed down and it didnt help gauge was climbing I went another 30 miles unloaded mind you,and by the time I got it limped in to ATS I was over 300 and boiling trans fluid on the ground and when I got there and stopped th e valve body was so warped it wouldnt even shift into park!!!The light never once came on!So moral of this blah, blah, blah is get a gauge!

Some of the 325/600's need the puter to be reflashed for proper performance... that could be your prob.
