What kind of brake controllers are all you guys using? The last one that I installed in an Econoline was tapped into the hydraulic line of the master cyl. The new ones out seem to be all electrical. What is the best and who makes it? I'm buying a new 28ft. Aljo bumper pull that brakes on all fours and weighs 5600lbs empty Thanks, Chris

I am using Tekonsha Voyager 9030 for 2 or 4 brake system. I pull a 31' 5th wheel. Works fine. I don't think you can use the hydraulic actuated system on the trucks with ABS. bg

I was told they out-lawed the good kind [hydraulic]
I got an electric [jap name brand], mine only has
one setting of pressure. You can adjust how hard it applies
the brake, but it doesn't apply more when you apply more foot
pressure.
I don't like these new kinds.

The adjustment seems to be very sensitive too. I think it is a Tekonsha too.

I use Draw-Tite's digital controller. It has adjustable settings for delay (how fast the brakes come on) and intensity (how hard the brakes come on). I am pretty happy with it, except when in stop-and-go traffic (construction zones). Even light pressure on the brake pedal brings on the trailer brakes fully (until pedal is released), as if in a normal stopping condition. This can be too much when you're just trying to control you idle speed. I believe some of the others (Tekonsha?) have a sensor which applies the trailer brakes proportionaly to your truck brakes.

One thing to remember: follow the labels on the wiring harnesses, not the colors. The blue wire on the controller does not necessarily attach to the blue wire on the truck, etc.

You might take a look at this site: http://www.fortunecity.com/marina/finisterre/1228/jorjan/id19.htm

Zzman, this does apply braking power according to the brake pedal activation. It has several advantages that I wanted:
1. Activates with the brake pedal
2. No build up of trailer brake application for those long periods of slight braking.
3. Not affected by inertia or gravity.

It isn't the most economical unit but I love the way it works.

Drop me line if any of you have questions.

Chris, I also have a jap made brand. got it at autozone. $60. 00. . Seems to work fine. It has both hard and soft setting. The last one I had in my last truck looked identical to this new one but cost 20 bucks more. If you have an auto zone out there you might take a look. Dodge also has a plug under the dash that you can use their pig-tail to plug into. of course it depends on what year model dodge you have. older trucks I don't think have that option.

Hey Rattlin, Thanks for the tip on the 2020 brake controller. I talked to the owner of the company and he explained the full function of the controller. I ordered one, should be delivered tommorow. $139. 95... Pricey, but I'M WORTH IT!!!! #ad

Tom C, the bandits at my local Dodge dealer wanted $60. 00 bucks for that little pig tail plug-in. I wired it with my own connectors a year and a half ago. . works fine. . shop rate $. 00 #ad

Chris,

That's great! I've put about 13K miles on mine with no problems. As you mentioned, I didn't like the trialer brake build up when in slow traffic that happens with some types of controllers. With inertia types, I'm not sure how they respond to slow braking conditions.

Here's how one of the guy's (Sandman)from here mounted his unit. http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=589847&a=4880909

Another installation was under the steering column. Longer screws, going through the stadard mounting holes, were used to mount the unit to the underside. I don't have a link to that site.

If I can help, let me know.

DrawTite Activator II
It has digital readout and works really well when pulling 28' Dutchman.
