My '91 W250 stopped dead last week while driving. I could tell it was electrical since it shut off and it would not crank and there were no dash lights or buzzers. The dome light, four way flashers, underhood light, etc. all worked, but not much else. I had already fixed the fuel solenoid connector years ago so I knew that the solenoid wasn't the problem because a bad connection at the fuel solenoid will allow the engine to crank but not start. Also, when the truck stopped, I opened the hood and smelled burnt wiring.
I had it towed home and did an internet search and found some old posts that suggested that that a fusible link may have done its job and failed. One post indicated that the wiring to the fuel heater should be inspected for rubbing and grounding out against the throttle cable bracket.
Since I have a factory service manual, I found the the fusible link that supplies the power for the fuel heater and determined that it was the link that failed. Then I inspected the fuel heater wiring and found a VERY small area in the insulation that had rubbed through and had allowed contact with the throttle cable bracket.
I bought new fusible links from Chrysler (20 gauge orange - 4 per package) and replaced the suspect link. I taped up the bare spot on the fuel heater wiring and covered it with some aftermarket convoluted plastic tubing to prevent future rubbing problems.
That was indeed the problem and the truck started right up after bypassing the burnt fusible link.
Many thanks to the person who posted their experience with a similar problem that helped me diagnose and repair my wiring.
This is not the first time that I was able to resolve a problem with my trucks using the knowledge and experinece on this site and I would like to reiterate that I believe that the TDR is an extemely valuable resource for all CTD owners and is worth much more than the price of admission. Thanks TDR for the forum and please remind all members to post their problems, no matter how insignificant they may seem (and how they were resolved) so that all members can benefit from their experiences. I cannot even imagine how much I would have had to pay to have a shop diagnose and fix this problem without having the TDR as a resource.
Please contact me if you need additional information or details.
