Hello Friends,

i just purchased a cab clearance light kit including harness and lights. and here comes the tricky part.

Is it feasible to make the outside clearance light flash with the turn signal? if so how would you do it? dual fillament bulb or just cancelling the existing bulb intermitintly.

I think this would be cool and unique :D

Thoughts, comments, suggestions anyone?

Thanks for your time

DD

I don't know what kind of bulb is presently in the cab light kit, but a dual element bulb would work fine, just run a wire from the left and right turn signals to the appropriate cab light bulb element and it should work.

That would be cool :D

I had a 1971 that I got from my grandpa, 178,000 miles with NO rebuild. 429 ThunderJET 365 hp 490 ftlbs of torque.

The only thing better than my 71 would have been a 71 with the suicide doors. Heck on the 2 door it weighed as much as me!

If you search for emergency vehicle lighting suppliers you will find control boxes to do the sequencial flash. Federal Signal comes to mind as a good supplier of such goodies. I like the strobes in the turn signals myself.

About the worst part of doing such things to lights is that each bulb has to have it's own feed to the controller - kinda like 4-wheel ABS systems. Detroit found out years ago that daisy-chaining lights was alot more cost-effective and easier to keep working.

Now you have done it - got me to thinking about dancing lights... .

Wonder how a lava lamp ground effect light would work?

Hey - that could be the next big thing to sell to the style-challenged young-uns with more of Mommy and Daddy's money than they know what to do with... ...

Another option would be to wire the outer lights like typical front side markers. Wire one side of the single filiment bulb to the other clearance lights being fed off the parking lights. The other wire would go to the front turn signal feeds. One circuit grounds through the other. The result would be that the outer lights flash by going out when the parks are on due to opposing voltage, but they will flash during the day also.

Wayne has the easy answer.

The clearance lights will flash at the same time as the turn signals when the lights are off and they will flash alternately to the turn signals when the lights are on (I think).

Steve

Thanks for the replys so far guys.

Wayne i am not clear on your concept can u elaborate some more

Steve thanks for the e-mail and keep working on it.

I appreciate all responces

If you ground the outer light to the turn signal wire. When the turn signals are off the light will ground though the t/s bulb and come on with the running lights. If you do't have the running lights on the power will come from the t/s and ground through the running lights there for flashing with the turn signal. If the running lights are on and the t/s comes on you will have power on both sides of the bulb with no ground- the light will flash opposite fo the turn signals. Now I have I really confused you?

Dan,

If you've ever noticed a lot of rigs will have the side marker light actually go off when the parking lights are on and the turn signal is powered up, but the side marker blinks normally when the parks are off.

What they're doing is wiring the bulb into the parks and the turn signal, technically the bulb doesn't have a dedicated ground. For example the bulb will ground through the TS circuit when the parks are on and it'll ground through the park circuit when the TS are on. But when the parks and the turn signals are on the bulb goes out because it has 12V on both sides so there is no current flow.

The little amount of current flow through the bulb doesn't cause any back feeding or illuminating of unwanted lights because the majority of the voltage is dropped going through the side marker.

Hope this helps, I can probably scan and post an diagram if needed.

Thanks Wayne and tgbol,

This is what i thought but it is smarter to play dumb and get additional elaboration as opposed to thinking you know the answers and mess something up:rolleyes:

Now the hard part.

trying to figure the wiring out. Does it go like this? tap the right or left t/s wire and ty into the coresponding cab light.

The big question is does anybody have the manual for a 2001 so i can find out the right wires to tap?

I cant wait to do this

and as it is my idea we might have to call it

I have a '68 Cougar with the sequential turn signals. It has a mechanical sequencer in the trunk that operates them and after 34 years & 128k it is getting a little noisy. But at least it still works.

My Cougar is my "2nd" car, it is what I drive when my truck is not available. Out of the 4 vehicles I own everything is 1968 & older except for the Ram
