2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission defrost problem

Recently my truck starting acting as if I had a loose battery connection or something. It has progressed to sometimes I have to turn the key 10 or more times for the starter to engage. When this happens there may or may not be a sound. My orginal idea is that it is the starter solenoid. However, when this happens the fuel pump does not run either, but I'm not sure if the fuel pump will run if the engine doesn't turn over. I'm thinking maybe a switch. What do you guys think? What is the easiest way to troubleshoot the problem. A new starter is $200+, I had to throw away that kind of money. .

Starter contacts don't keep the lift pump from running. You may have more than one problem. Do you have a "wait to start" light?

The lift pump should normally run for 20 seconds each time the key is cycled off then on again.

I assume you have already verified that your battery terminals are clean on batteries and that all four battery cable clamps are tight.

Larry B's kit save me from having to replace the starter on mine 60k ago still rocks at 177k. If you jog the key to start (turn to start position momentarily and release) you should get a 40 - 45 second run on the LP. If you don't have a gage (you do have gages don't you?) listen for the pump to run. If it's not coming on check the pump relay.

I was thinking about the lift/transfer pump operation after I posted the above. I don't think I've ever repeat-cycled the transfer pump except after draining it or dumping a lot of fuel by removing the filter. It is possible, I don't know, that the lift pump will only run until the cannister is full and then shuts itself off. Can anyone clarify this point?

I'm really thinking it may be an ignition switch issue. When I turn the switch, sometimes the truck starts right up but most of the time nothing happens on the first couple of tries. The lift pump only seems to work if the starter actually engages which when I think about it is normal for this truck. for the pump to run 45 seconds the starter actually has to be bumped. I hope this makes sense to you guys. I'll still order the Larry Bs.

My truck has just started the same thing. I checked all the connections, load tested the batteries. Sometimes it will fire right off. Sometimes I have to sit there and turn the key a few times to get it to turn over. My truck has 125k miles on it. I questioned the starter too. But I might go with that kit.

Guys, what you're explaining is "exactly" what mine was doing until I did the Larry B's kit, note previous post mentioning present mileage 177k - installed about 60k ago = 117k, which is right around the 125k mark. So, don't waste your money on a new starter go the Larry B's kit. If it's still the starter then you've wasted no money = remove the Larry B's kit and install in new starter.

Do you have a manual transmission? I had the clutch switch work on and off for awhile tell it finally failed. Later also did the Larry B's contacts as well. For me it was a combination of the 2 problems.
