Ok, I installed the new dash/wiring harness in my truck this weekend, but am not getting any power when I turn the key on in the new column. Everything's hooked up except I didn't mount the column yet. The headlights also don't work so I think it's a bigger issue than just the column.

I have power at the PDC under the hood, but it got too dark for me to check the fusebox in the dashboard. Does anyone have any suggestions for me to try this weekend when I go back up there to work on it again?

Thanks,

Joe H

Sorry Joe,

Electrical problems can be a nightmare. Why did you replace the harness? Might give a clue as to what the problem may be. Check the fuseable links, then trace the power path. Don't forget the return ( ground ) side. Also check to make sure no pins bent over while installing the harness.

Hugh.

Ok, the truck had a dash fire that originated in the steering column (the PO didn't take it in for the ignition switch recall  ). It burned the shifter area of the column, instrument cluster, and dash around the instrument cluster. The truck used to be a tow truck so the driver had a fire extinguisher and managed to get the fire out before it spread throughout the interior.

I removed all of the burned/melted plastic, column and wiring from the dash and replaced it with a harness and column from a 1994 1500 4x4. The wiring matched at the plug end and I have a diesel instrument cluster that I will be installing this weekend (it didn't show up from the out of state yard in time to get it up to Charlotte).

Anyhow, I checked all the fuses in the PDC before removing the old harness and in the main fuse panel from the 1500 before I plugged it in, but I don't know if any blew when I applied power to the harness (I didn't smell any magic smoke ;) ). I couldn't find any obvious signs of burned wiring under the hood, but I might have to look again.

Are there any other fusible links under the hood outside the PDC that would cause a no power situation?

Thanks,

Joe H
