Temp 20 deg. wait to start lite doesnt work, voltmeter shows discharge as is air hearers were on but they arent, battery does not discharge, shoews same voltage as alt. output terminal-12. 40 12. 70. a. s. d relay was checked wirh bat. voltage o. k. alternator was checked and o. k. Air heater relays seem to be o. k. I noticed the voltmeter started to take longer to recover after start and kept getting worse till the vaolneter stays on full discharge now. new battery . checked the grounds om bat, alt, computer, engine block all o. k. Could the sepertine belt slip? shouold I ck alt. again, could voltmeter be bad? I am at a loss Thank you all.

Clean the terminals inside the the alt wiring plugs first. Charge the battery to a full charge. Start the engine. USE a volt meter to check the voltage on the BLUE field wire on the on the back of the alt. It should be 12 + volts. if not. Replace the ASD relay on the left fender well . If no change. Put a test light on the GREEN field wire on the back of the alt. It should flicker. If not it is either your voltage regulator or you have a bad diode in the alt. Still not sure. remove the BLUE AND GREEN wires on the back of the alt . Run a jumper wire from where the GREEN wire was to a good ground. Then run A jumper wire from the terminal where the BLUE wire was on the alt to the battery + post. Start the engine then test voltage. Voltage should go off the chart as you rev the engine. BE CAREFUL ! DO NOT TURN ON ANY LIGHTS . tHE VOLTAGE SPIKE WILL BLOW THE LIGHTS ECT. If voltage is low rebuild the alt or get a NEW alt. If voltage went way high then it is most likely the voltage regulator is going bad. The regulator is built into the main computer for 92 and 93 trucks. Replace/rebuild the computer... . Or get one of my external voltage regulator kits. It will fix the problem and it has an adjustable voltage feature. Look up my other posts for more info on the kit. call me if you have any questions... ///MM 301-219-7399

Thank you very much . As soon as it gets decent temp. I shall do this, The closest place tohave the system checked is 15 miles I dont know if the battery will keep the heater running that long. , so I will try this,I will let you know what i find. Thanks to you and dvolk for your help.

Hi Bob,
I still rebuild alt's and starters all the time. I have all the internal components for the first gen's on my shelf .
I also have brand new alt's and starters as well. Email me with your wants or needs

Back in those days we were still rebuilding alt's. I miss that

I went through the test and when I put the jumoers on the alt. at idle got over 13. 5 volts and a little above idle got oveCould r 18 volts, so what are your voltage reg. kits like and do you repair the controller or are replacement ones availble? Could there be a problem in the 60 wire connector at the controller? Looks awful flimsly to me. Thank you so much for all the help.
