Electrical problem - need help. (fixed)

I just got myself into trouble. One of my running lights ( these are after market lights) shorted out and blew a fuse. While trouble shooting this problem I must have blown another fuse somewhere. I have checked all the fuses in the panel left side of dash and in the PDC.

There are the symptoms.

Transfer pump does not come on when you turn the key

Engine will crank but not start

Fuel gauge does not function

Odometer flashes after a few seconds.

No power to the running light relay ( I don't remember exactly but I tapped a red wire under the dash that was hot with ignition on?

If I jump 12 V to this relay wire the transfer pump will run and the engine will start and will keep running with ignition off. It stops when I remove the jumper.

I think it's a fuse somewhere. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Tom

Humor me here, Go back and re-check fuse #3 in the pdc 20amp. That fuse supplies the auto shut down relay. I think you'll find your problem there. The fuse will be labeled "ENGINE CONT 2", Re-check number 6 as well.

Also, just because a fuse looks good doesn't mean it is. Even those that meter good outside the vehicle can be bad.

Paul, thanks for your help. I checked those fuses, engine control - 20 amp & engine control - 40 amp with an ohm meter and both check good. These are the odd looking square box about 1/2 X 1/2 in. It appears the fuel pump relay is not picking. Where does the pick voltage come from for the fuel pump relay?

The red wire under the dash which should have 12v with ignition on (the one that I tapped) is not getting 12V

wcjp, I just swapped the fuses, no change, Thanks

Fuse 3 is the power source for the fuel pump relay. Take a test light and see if there is power available to fuse 3. Also take a look at the maxi-fuses, ther are not immune to damage. Fuse 10 50amp comes to mind, it feeds the ign switch.

I found the problem. It was the 10amp engine fuse, position 9 in the side panel. Thought I had checked it before but eyes aren't what the used to be. Thanks for all the help. Now all I have to do is put every thing back together and find out why the hella lamp shorted out.

If your tap cut the wire, or the wire that tapped into it on it's way to the relay is grounding out, that would certainly blow the fuse. Only takes a fraction of a second.
