 My son had a problem with my truck today, (of course he is 180 mi. from home) he shut down to fuel up and when he tried to restart it would not turn over. The heater fan motor, power windows and door locks would all operate but the radio, windshield wipers, fuel gauge and the information center would not operate. Could this be a problem in one of the relays under the hood? The only thing electrical I've done in the past week is pulling the plug on the anti-lock brakes. I don't have a book on this truck yet so no wiring diagrams to stare at. Anybody have any ideals?

Pull the covers on the steering column. All those cicuits feed out of the ing switch. There have been noted problems with wires chaffing in the column assy.

The radio, cigar lighter, turn signals,RWAL module feeds from a 14 gage black/ white stripe. That wire feeds fuses 7,8,9,10.

The message center feeds from a 20 gage pink/w black stripe.

The starter is a 14 gage yellow.

I hope I grabed the right page. LOL

Nothing ever happens when you're at home and ready for it.

Hmmm. . (looking at the FSM wiring diagrams... . )

Blower motor is Fuse 11, that's ok. Locks are Fuse 6, ok. Power windows are Fuse 12, also ok.

Info Center is Fuse 2, not ok. Radio is Fuse 8, not ok. Wipers are Fuse 10, not ok.

The common point to Fuses 2, 7 (Lighter), 8, 9 (Turn Signals), and 10 is a 12-gauge red wire to the ignition switch. That's also where power comes from that goes out to the starter relay from the switch. So it's something before that.

The 12-guage red lead goes thru the bulkhead connector to the under-hood area on pin 49. It goes forward (still 12-guage red) in a big bundle (a 22-guage white lead comes off it somewhere along here) to a fusible link and then to splice A0. The fusible link may be a short bit of 20-guage orange.

A whole bunch of fusible links are all together in that bundle above the left inside fender and outboard of the two big grid-heater relays.

There's a way to tell if it's that particular fusible link. The Cargo Lamp comes off the same source before that link.

Modified Question: Can he turn on the Cargo Lamp and see it and its indicator lamp in the cab come on? If so, it's almost certainly that fusible link.

Do you have an e-mail address I could send a few sheets from the FSM to show you how I got to this conclusion. Big pictures are hard to pass thru TDR.

... ... . after I posted this, I see that Phillip also was reading up on this and posted while I was composing my note. His data is correct. And if the chafing happened, and shorted out to ground, that link above could be gone. If you pull the cover over the switch, see if you have 12volts on the 12-gauge red wire going to position A1 on the switch... .

Thank you for the replies. After wiggling the wires around and tapping here and there the truck started yesterday, so I told him not to shut it down again till they got to their destination. I will relay your information to him if it won't start again today. It is probably under the collum at that connection or a chaffing issue. Last week I installed the double u-joint Borgeson shaft so that whole area received some vibration (read allot of big hammer ;) ) more than likely I shook something loose that shouldn't be. My Email address is -- email address removed -- those wiring diagrams would be great, my wife is going to get me the manuel for my truck from Geno's for my birthday, just have to let her know that :) .

My son said that he tapped on the relay closest to the firewall on the fenderwell. This morning the truck started like nothing had ever happened. Do we have an electric fuel pump on the 92 model? I see on the diagram that DBF sent me (Thank You Owen) that it says fuel pump relay, or is this just for the gas models.

Mechanical fuel pump, that relay is for gas models.

Thank you for the confirmation, I didn't think we had an electric fuel pump. A guy at Advance Auto tried to sell my son a $80 set of 4 relays one of which was for an electric fuel pump.

Problem solved. :D I chased down that fusible link and guess what, it had already been disabled. The wire they used to go around it must have lost contact and by unplugging and messing around with the relays it regained contact. I took the jumper off and everything acted like my son had described and yes the cargo indicater light does light with out the fusible link. All is well now!
