I have a 96 5. 9 12 valve with auto trans with 217000 miles. Last night the GEN light came on and the gauge dropped down to about 12 when it usually is on 14 so I thought the alternator was bad. I replaced it and now the GEN light is off but the gauge still reads 12 and when I test it with out it running at the battery it reads 13 volts and if the engine is running it only reads 12 volts. Does this make since? Could the heaters be stuck on and how could I test for that? HELP!!

Just unplug the small wires to the grid heaters. They just pull off, no wrenches needed. One test (I'm sure there are more) to see if the PCM voltage regulator is operational is to check voltage at the two small terminals on the back of the alternator. Key on, engine not running you should see 7 to 12 volts between the terminals. That voltage is required to excite the field, and the alternator won't function without it.

I found the problem. There is a fusable link for the alternator and it was blown. It must of went when the alternator went.
