Hi, I'm a new member to the TDR

I was hoping you guys could help me out with a problem I am having with a 92 CTD auto 4x4. I was stopped at an intersection waiting to make a turn when all the sudden she dies. The electrical system was mostly dead, no gauge lights, no wait to start, but i still had emergency flashers and the horn worked. Here is what I know so far: The battery is in good shape and the alternator was charging fine. I think the previous owner did some rewiring on the driver side inner fender where the main feed to the truck runs. There is an orange wire there that had a 30 amp fuse that was blown, I put a new one in and as soon as the ign. switch is turned the fuse blows. I figured there was a short in the switch so I pulled it out, took it apart and it looked a little cooked. I replaced it but I am still having the same problem. I have tried to trace wires to see where they go but the harnesses are so full of wires and stiff it is hard to pull them out. I also have a service book but the wiring diagram is not very good. Anybody know where I can get a good one? I need to get the beast back on the road soon.

I thank you all in advance for any assistance you can provide. I have lurked around the forums for a while and was always impressed at how friendly everybody is and how eager they are to help. Thanks again,

Travis

Wiring Problems

Welcome Travis, the stock 92 wiring harness does not have any fuses under the hood, only inside the cab under the steering column. It should have fuse links, possibly one of these may have been replaced with a fuse holder. The fuse links are located on the harness, between the battery and the ignition switch, on the drivers side inner fender, near the heater relays. The fuse block is after the ignition switch. Sounds as if you have a dead short in the wiring. I can help you out with wiring diagrams if you need them, just send me an email.

Hi Travis, welcome to the group.

This probably won't help much and Neil will probably be the one to help you the most, but here is what I found. I have a 91 manual and a 93. Figured the 91 would probably be the same. There is an orange wire from the battery, goes thru 2 different fuse links. Both of these go to the ign. switch and from there go just about every where.

Turn the key on and see what works from the following- power wimdows, heater blower, windshield wiper, radio/clock, turn signals, fuel heater(if cool enough to give indication), brake lights,

seat belt lamp and buzzer, backup lamps.

If any of these don't work, then pull the fuse for that circut and then try a new 30 amp in the holder under the hood. This will allow you to at least get the problem narrowed down a little(if this works right!:) )

This type problem can be real tough to find. Good luck.

Well after many long nights of tracing wires I finally found the problem :D There were some wires that were a little close to the head and the insulation melted off and they were shorting. I replaced them and moved them away from the head and everything seems fine; however, now my overdrive isn't working right. It works intermittently which leads me to belive it is the TPS or the connector to it. I'll have to tear into that on Sunday though. Gotta get that fixed and put a radiator in my 72 Chev C20 and fix a transmission line. Been a busy week  but the major headaches are over now :)
