Electrical Starter Problem in Pharr, Texas

Thanks, TDR Staff
I have a corrosion problem with the positive battery lead going to the starter. If I pull up hard on the cable it gets enough contact to energize the starter. Left on its own there is not enough power reaching the starter for it to crank the engine. The local Ram dealer (Burns Motors) refused to service the vehicle as it is over 10 years old. Does anyone have a suggestion as to who might be able to correct my problem in the Pharr ? McAllen, Texas area?

If that cable has "the green goo" growing in it, you'd do well to replace the cable, and not fiddle with it. It's pretty basic stuff, any local garage should be able to do. I just googled and got a whole list of shops between Pharr, and Edinburg.

No 'Green Goo' evident. The issue appears to be right in the connection at the starter where corrosion is interfering with the current from the battery. I have contacted a shop in Pharr which was recommended by a neighbor. They are going to look at the truck tomorrow morning and I hope they will be able to correct the issue.

If they decide you need a new starter don't let them sell you a parts box store starter (like Autozone or NAPA). They have lifetime warranties that you will likely need more than once. Either repair parts from http://www.fostertruck.com/ or a new Denso is your best bet of not having troubles again in the near future.

Your (starter) contact is probably worn out. The battery side contact wears out. It can be replaced if you can find the contacts.
If can pull on the starter cable and it starts I would say the contact is loose.
I bought the best starter Auto zone had for less than a dense cost.
I changed the contacts on my denson several times. Up to you!

Success. Sometimes the most obvious escape us. Turned out the negative battery connection on the driver side battery had not been tightened sufficiently and had worked loose. Pulling on the positive cable meant I was leaning on the negative post with my arm and that tightened the negative connection enough to allow the engine to crank.
