Hey, any electricians have, or have a lead on a 200amp master breaker for an older style box? Ours was installed 20 years ago and the master crapped out. We have the older, larger size breakers and Square D seems to be the big name in these parts. Our electrician wired us up a pair of 100's but says he doesn't know where to get a replacement 200, so any help would be appreciated.

(they want $1000 to replace the box!)

Check with a electrical supply house. If the breaker is that rare, you will find it will cost almost as much as if you had a new updated box. I just did one that was installed when the house was built, early 70's. The breaker was $350. 00. $1000 sounds a bit high to me, but I don't know all the circumstances.

Find out which style breaker it is; there are many and they usually are incompatible. Then google "ge 200a main breaker tqdl", for example.

I'm not sure what you mean by style.

The box is a rather large one and 200 amp service. $1000 for removal and replacement doesn't seem like too much. I just don't have it. The box is fine, I would rather just replace the breaker. The new GE stuff is a slim line style breaker. These are the older style. How many variations can their possibly be?

I was able to find breakers for my brothers ancient circa 1950's 40amp box. They were indeed more expensive than an entire new 100amp box with main breaker, but they were available. And it was a brand popular back then but never heard of anymore.

You should be able to find a replacement breaker without spending $1000. If you have 200 amp service to a residence, it certainly isn't all that old by electrical standards. Twenty years is nothing and 200 amp is contemporary.

You guys are some brave folks. I thought I would be Mr. Home electrician when I woke up the Dr at the hospital was thumpin me in the chest with one of the rubber reflex hammers. Asking me what my name was,I told him if he didnt stop that Id hit him so hard he wouldnt remember his either. Now striking an arc welding and flash photography make me jumpy

My email notifications must have crapped out again. Sorry guys. I found the breaker Info and searched it via RYoungs link.

TQD 22200 List, $249. Their price $69. How cool is that! I guess up hear in Maine, GE boxes are uncommon. Square D is the big name here. So that is why the electrician could not find a breaker. I checked alll the local suppliers myself, and they all acted like I had some ancient box. Sheesh, seems pretty much like they just wanted to sell me a new box and breakers. Anyhow, I will order the new breaker and get the lektrishin over to install it. I don't do anything from the Main on up. I work only below the main. More comfortable with that. He'll have to have the power company pull the meter anyways. They will want a qualified electrician for this gig.

Thanks for the help y'all. Weird how it only took about two years for me to come up with the idea to ask for help with this on the TDR. A few days later... . problem solved. Membership dues covered by member help. The forum that pays you back! :)
