Don't come to Colorado. No elk here. Way too cold (even in July!)... No good hunting here. Stay away. You'll hate it. Too high. The whole state is above 15,000 feet- altitude sickness! :-laf :-laf :-laf

Seriously- I have read where CO is stating to become overehunted. Good chances for getting one if you are in it for meat, but trophies can be had elsewhere. I would like to hunt Montana sometime for the the eventual shoulder mount display in my 15,000SF living room :D

Here is the link for Colorado Department of Wildlife for more info. I have only been here for the last 8 years, but I'm sure others will chime in for for info.

Heading out in another week for 4th season. We'll keep all posted on results!

Same thing for Nevada. Puny little runts. Actually, Nevada's herd is producing some world class animals. Please stay away from US Outfitters! They sued a bunch of western states because of the way the states managed their herds i. e. quotas for out of staters. Thankfully, the senate and house said that the states can manage herds however they want, even on federal lands. The reason this is upsetting is because some of us can't afford to go elsewhere to hunt, so we'd have ended up drawing against a whole lot of others for the few tags available. Nothing against out of staters, I just think in staters should get better chances, anywhere. Try here for more info in Nevada.

Funny you say it's over hunted! CDW released a statement this season that the state herd is 125,000 head too strong! 1st season i went with a group and we knocked down 5 elk in 3 hours between 7 of us. It was good huntin that day. But, on the other hand, it was so stinking crowded! There were people all over the place, way too many hunters for my likes! I'll be in MT over thanksgiving to see how the hunting is up there. My recommendation for CO is make sure you get a 1st season tag, and go opening day! If you want meat grab yourself a cow tag so you don't have to waste your chance waiting for a legal bull. We went back up to the same spot 2nd season, and 13 of us didn't shoot a thing; I saw a near-legal bull, but that was all anybody saw. I can see over-hunted, but they are definately not over-killed. They all flee to private land and chill out till season is over.

CO all the way

Just chased the last one in WY southward toward CO this evening.

PS: How much is it going to cost me to come down to CO and hunt? Is it really as fantastic as the say. Why, in fact, I heard AM 1100 Grand Jct. talking about the FOURTH elk season getting ready to start up.

FOUR elk season. Can't go wrong down there. :p

Heard tell you have to shoo all the cows out of the way just to take a poke at a decent tropy bull, and 8 point bull are as common as mud hens.

Actually the problem we ran into, when north of Craig, was getting a clear shot at a cow, since all the bulls were in the way. We had two seperate herds pass by us in one morning, and 90% was spikes and forks, 6% 6x6 and up, and 4% cows. Unfortunately we only had cow tags for the first season, so we had to leave the bulls.

Well, before I get accussd of being a prevaricating hound, there must have been/or was at least one more cow left in WY this morning. ;) :-laf

Be heading up to BZ, MT tomorrow so the wife can give me a hand turning it into steaks and such. Got to love her for that. Cutting up an elk by myself is a chore. Okay, I know some of you probably can have it sliced, diced, and wrapped before noon and not even break a sweat. :)

Oh, almost forgot. Jkalchik, now you have to take it back... . the vegetarian joke that is... . nanner, nanner. :-laf

jdakin, whilst hunting this morning I came up with a simple mathmatical formula to aid in your decision:

#wolves X #elk = (best place to go as approaches zero)

Therefore, since MT, ID, and WY have wolves = doesn't look promising.

More over since CO wolves = 0. Thus we solve the equation: 0 wolves X 1. 5 kazillion elk = 0. CO it has to be Oo.

PS: klenger would be proud of me, neh?

Utah has some choice spots, but getting a tag is impossible. Out of state you're even more at a disadvantage. Basically, you want trophy's you gotta pay big bucks. State ground has a couple, but it's nothing like what they have on ranches. I archery hunt and to me, it's easier to get into trophy bulls then rifle hunting. I don't think I'll rifle hunt ever again, it's just not fun anymore. If it's strictly for meat I would.

I've seen some monsters come for New Mexico.

I've hunted Elk off and on since 1981 with my dad, more in Colorado than any other state. In 11 Elk hunts with my dad, I have 2, my dad only 3. We just got back a week ago from south-central Colorado - La Jara area. Check out my story and pictures (no Elk, though... )

Thanks for sharing the adventure Tom. Reminds me of a hunting trip with brother in the Gravely Range, MT. Now that I'm down in WY we don't get to go together now. Almost went up to be camp jack this year, but I didn't get my elk til yesterday.

Aint a wall tent and a wood stove plumb wonderful when the flakes are swirling and it's dumping white stuff outside? :)

Well I hate to say it but yeah we do have 8 point bulls here. The only thing is most are rag head bulls and I wouldn't waste my time mounting them :{ . In 15 years of hunting I've only seen 3 bulls worth mounting. The DOW is all about numbers, tourism, landowners and outfitters and sadly forgotten about the big game. Our big game is going down the same path as small game IMO.
