ECU / Altenator / Battery, Problem 5.9L Engine (1992) 4x4, D250

5.9L Engine (1992) 4x4, D250

This is my take: Alternator faild after estimated 200,000 m, replaced it ( $ 100- ). Turned out that the alternator charged at 18v and stayd wide open. New battery ( $ $ 200- ) . And after looking for a replacement ECU I found a few that might have worked between $ 500 to
$ 950- that said I sent the ECU unit to SIA ( trough Ebay ) $ 200- . I have not found out if the ECU is repairable . My point is one thing lead to another had I only kept my eye on the volt meeter .........! Do not make my mistakes ,expensive if you will.

With that vintage truck it may have been more practical to have just installed an external voltage regulator

i have a 1992 Dodge cummins diesel D350 that has quit charging. I have taken the alternator to the alternator shop and had it tested. The technician advised that it is working correctly.I pulled the computer off and sent it to be rebuilt. I have since re-installed both the alternator along with the computer but it still does not charge. I checked all the fuses and put a new crank shaft position sensor on the truck and it still does not charge. I would appreciate any help in resolving this problem. I have solved my charging problem on my D350 Cummins Diesel.I now realize the frustrations that that everybody goes through, trying to solve the charging issues on the first generation trucks but don’t give up! You can solve the problem but it may take you a while todo so.I spent about three weeks, tracing down wires,in addition to all the other things that I have done that I have listed above. The forum is a great resource! Very knowledgeable people and very helpful, and I didn’t have to install a external voltage regulator! The problem was the first relay on the left side fender! It was blown and the red wire going to the plug was broken. I replaced the wire and the relay and it charges like a champ.

The alternator should have 3 terminals, the large wire needs to be b+ at all times the 2 small are the field wires.1will be b+ with key on the other will be the charge control ckt (varying ground).

In my opinion being old school the " fusible links " can be a pain , it took me a while to figure them out and since then it is one of the first places I go when electrical problems arise .

How is the external regulator?
My 91.5IC did this 18v for 10sec then return to normal. Replace the alternator and regulator and it hasn't done it since still have the pulsing which I believe to be the tensioner spring getting weak each time I've taken the belt off for other maintenance that pulsing has gotten worse. The only thing left in my charging system to be replaced to solve the pulsing problem is the wiring harness

Agen Does the external voltage regulator bolted to the firewall right beside the windshield wipers motor test good this little metal box is the brain for the alternator if the brain died the alternator doesn't know what to do. This was my failure.
Cause and effect analysis
Pulsing charge rate typical of these trucks(volt gage needle bouncing in cadence with the diesel rattle) just like a trampoline and it bounced one too many times and went through. Fortunately for me the contacts didn't weld and drop back down to normal quickly enough not to fry all the capacitors and lights in my truck. Oncoming traffic thought I was flashing my high beams they were on low.
