So the normal operating cost of a late model diesel is $10000 every 175K or so? That is utterly absurd. But we are talking about Gov. When you folks talk about tall pipe emissions test, what exactly is that? Is it actually measuring the quantity of NO2, CO, CO2, PM etc?
 
That's an ugly picture when you add up all those parts but I think only the DPF is known to be a service replacement item and sag2 is quoting dealer retail prices.

There are lots of sources for discounted MOPAR parts and the aftermarket will probably begin selling dpfs by the time most of us need one.

I wouldn't be disappointed to buy a dpf at an auto parts store that didn't do much of the "f" part of the abbreviation as long as it came with documentation that claims it is street legal and looks right.

Theoretically tailpipe testing should sniff for all the bovine waste the epa and algore consider harmful. In reality, I suspect few sniffers in the hands of test stations will be capable of accurately testing much. If they only look for a big ugly can under the truck perhaps we can gut them.
 
I used to think that the hybrids were not cost effective due to the battery cost. After 4-5 years they would need replacing at great cost to the owner, while a diesel owner would not incur such costs. This new info about emissions equipment life span/costs makes the objective cost comparison between a gas/hybrid and a diesel a lot closer than I previously thought.

I wonder how long a small diesel engine emissions equipment (e. g. VW Jetta diesel) would last and what it would cost to replace.

The above statements assume that the owner keeps the vehicle in compliance w/ Federal emissions regulations.
