Emissions Testing to start country wide??

Ok so guess what engine I get assigned

Question to those of you in the know out there ... I have heard that there will be some type of emmisions testing starting im many states that previously did not have anything before.



Over on the TDIClub board, it is stated that in the Northeast: MA, ME, VT, and NY will not allow 2004 - 2006 TDI to be sold (I assume that the Cummins HO is included in this list).



They also stated that cars/truck from 1997 upwards will be tested using an ODB port ... WTF IS AN ODB PORT!!!!



I HATE these acrynoms!!! What does ODB stand for???!!!



Do the 12 valve trucks (1997 & 1998. 5) have these ports??????



If not, will they do some type of tail pipe test???



What can we do to reduce the black smoke to pass the test (12 valvers with P7100 pumps)????



I believe that in the "Live Free or Die" state of NH we are starting this testing this year, but not sure.

OBD is On Board Diagnostics. Usually called OBD II. Its basically a port that taps into the electronics associated with emissions hardware and software.



From what I've seen... usually if your service engine soon light comes on on a gasser its because an emission part is screwy. Dont have much to do with the actual performance of the engine itself.



My work truck was a 97 Chevy with OBD II. The dealer could care less that it ran like total crap... . as long as the OBD didn't show an emissions related problem... it was running fine. :rolleyes:
 
I live in Harris County (Houston area), Texas, a designated EPA non-attainment area. Therefore, our vehicles have to undergo emissions checks annually. Pre-OBDII vehicles (back to around 1973 or so) have to go on the chassis dynamometer where emissions are measured over a prescribed load/speed cycle. OBDII vehicles are checked for codes and proper function via the OBDII data port only - no actual measurement of emissions! Oh, and by the way, diesel vehicles are NOT subject to these tests here!! :D



IF there were a Federally-mandated EPA emissions program (something I've not heard of), I suspect it would be very similar to the one described above that they imposed on the State of Texas for non-attainment areas.

FATCAT: On your p-pump truck - just disconnect the AFC boost signal line... . or loosen it so it doesn't get any boost. It will act like a 'valet switch' and your truck will pass any smoke opacity test.



Trucks with injectors, etc. will have to play a bit more.



Right now they just do a snap-idle test... ... I know my truck just smokes a little bit of blue at high rpm and no load... . so I should pass that one just fine.



For the Volkswagen I'll probably stuff a few rags in the airbox to prevent the MAF from seeing additional airflow and adding fuel. :-laf Hopefully it won't damage anything or collapse the air intake tube.



As for "ODB" - He's a "has-been" rap artist..... :-laf

I had my truck to inspection twice since it was new. Last time was about a month and a half ago.

Neither time did they test emissions, nor did they notice I have a 12 valve 98 that's supposed to have a cat... . that's not there.

Oh BTW pretty much all of NJ is on that ozone map.
 
IF you live in the Houston area ( district 12 of the State of Texas ) and you own a car 1978 or a truck 1978 or older you do not have to do a emissions test and your safety sticker will only cost you the old price and thats about $12. 50 or so . But the way things are going around the Houston area I wouldn't be surprise that, that might change . Was a big article in this past Sundays Paper about how there are more cars travelling on the Houston and surrounding metropolitan area highways and byways here lately than any other place in the country ( I already knew that , got that tid bit of info from my employer back in Feb. of 2001 ) also was a article about how Texas has lost more farm land than any other state and how we are one of the very few States that have no laws on the books to try to stop the loss. Oh yes the price you must pay for economical development and progress and growth . I have heard rumor that the diesel trucks will do the sniff thing in the next couple of years , that is what one inspection station told a city employee that I know but I haven't check in to it myself.

MV testing

First of this month Jersey started the OBD ll testing. No more sticking the exhaust to read emissions. Just had my truck done and when I asked about it I was told they do not do emissions on Diesels. Now I got two years to worry about it.

Well, that's actually why the spark gas engines our company builds are regulated for non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC). The EPA figured out that, compared to the (ahem) natural releases from wildlife, decaying vegetation, etc. , the methane fuel that might escape from the exhaust of an engine is insignificant! :rolleyes:

What about volcano erruptions? Do they test them? I assume they eclipse ALL other sources or air pollution.
 
Colorado

I heard a rumor that Colorado is getting rid of their emissions testing in 2004, for the counties and cities that have it. I have heard it from several people so there must be something to it:rolleyes: :confused: I never thought this would have happened with all the tree huggers here.
 
After driving though Denver's air pollution a few winters back I hope for the sake of the folks living there that they continue testing. I'll bet it just as you said, a rumor.



What about volcano erruptions? Do they test them? I assume they eclipse ALL other sources or air pollution.
They do test them but there isn't much you can do about it.

When you consider the US burns enough crude per year to fill an average football stadium 432 miles deep it's a good thing that there are emissions requirements on motor vehicles.

You can just fill up with a tank of 20% biodiesel and easily pass emissions on the VW.



And BTW, ODB ROCKS, he's not a has been. Although he is currently in jail, you can't F with the wutang clan ;)
 
Here in Phoenix we have to do the snap-idle test every year for $28 a pop. It's just a way of fining people who think with their brain and buy diesels. I don't know of anyone who has failed the test. They let you do the test yourself if you want to. You just watch a monitor and floor it when it says and let off when it says. By easing into the throttle you can eliminate 50% of the puff. The monkeys at the emmissions stations have no clue. They just want the smelly old diesels out of there as fast as possible. ;)



I pass every year with around a 4% opacity. We're allowed 40%.

I have my aftermarket plate full forward along with my AFC housing and with 370 injectors.



The test is a joke.

The thing you do if you have a 24 V with comp is turn box to 1X1. We in the NW have had the (TEST) around here for more than 20 years. Eric
 
Here in Ct, emissions testing is starting again next month after being suspended for about 2 years.

Testing will now be done by local authorized repair shops. Not many have signed up to check diesels... only 2 of 50 in the county I live in.

It will be interesting to see if the 91 will make it thru... I'll probably

put it back to the stock adjustments before I go thru.

here in Ohio in certain county's, I live in Portage county i had to take my in for an e-check. the test they do is called an Opacity test which measure's darkness of your exhaust . tested at 0. 3%

the limit is 20. 0%. so you have to pray hoping that it dosn't burp when they take thru the gear's up 25 mph. just some info for you all to look for when they go to test your truck's.
