About 50 years ago when I was a poor sailor, a group of us didn't have the funds to pay. We looked around for the stairs and were confronted by the security goons and escorted out the door.

None of these things are free. Just to get in front of the building is expensive! The ESB is beautiful and no visit to that isn't complete without a visit to the Chrysler Building. If you like Art Deco style, then they are must see.
If you just want to go to a roof, then I think this is a better deal. Lots more to see and do in the vicinity.

If you need something iconic and free in NYC, walk the Brooklyn Bridge. I was there less than a month ago.

We did the stair climb in LA California at what use to be the UCB building as a fund raising for Children's Hospital.

I don't think im up to the ESB
