does any one have any info on which direction to go to correct the overheat problem,. . truck ran fine until i pulled a load of dirt with my dumptrailer. . now transmission heats up first and then the engine but just when pulling the trailer loaded or empty. . . I have a 99 ram 2500 4x4 5. 9 , I have the juice with attidude in the tow mode. I did change the thermostat as it has never been changed, but that didnt help. . any info will be greatly appriciated. . thanks

Is the radiator clean at the top drivers side?

The blowby bottle/vent emmits oil vapores and dust collects to plug it.

It is a good place to start looking.

I agree, clean out the radiator. It is most likely plugged with dirt/leaves. The transmission cooler is inside the Radiator, so a dirty rad will prevent both the engine and transmission from cooling.

Actually the transmission cooler is in front of the radiator and runs vertical on the drivers side of it. However a plugged and dirty radiator will prevent cool air being pulled over the transmission cooler thus the reason your transmission heats up before your motor. Pulling and cleaning the radiator is a fairly simple task with minimal tools. I use Simple Green undiluted to get my stuff clean. Just spray it on the outsides and let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing it out. Repeat as neccessary until its clean. At this point you will have the best access to the oil vent tube and catch bottle. Personally I remove the factory catch bottle and add a 2 sided male nipple in it and add a length of 3/4" heater hose to get the vent below the front axle and prevent the radiator from getting plugged again. Hope this helps!

Many thanks to all who replyed. I did clean the radiator, and I must say I couldnt believe what that blow by tube has done to clog it. . I now extended it as suggested and the radiator is bright aluminum again. I will put it to the tow test soon...
