Got the parts to rebuild a Tractor motor, while collecting other odds and ends and starting teardown for hot tank & machine work, I thought about assembly lube other than the one I've used Lubriplate Engine assembly grease.

IDEAS?

It has been a while since I've rebuilt a motor. I would use the lubriplate and another grease on the camshaft - came in a small black round container, was a grey graphite in color. I'll have to look tonight to see what it is.

There are a bunch of other options as well. Redline makes an assembly lube as well as others - never used them. But I have used the redline oils.

All of the major cam manufacturers sell assembly lube and they’re all about the same. Grey in color. My buddy at the machine shop uses several brands interchangeably. Manly and comp cams are names I’ve seen. The one thing they all have in common is ZDDP for the main additive. Other than cam and valve train all getting that lube on each contact point ( journals, lobes, lifters, push rod tips and rockers) he simply uses motor oil on the mains, rods, pistons and rings. He primes the system with a 1/2 inch drill motor and a dummy pump shaft for 2-3 minutes rotating the crank 90 degrees every 30 seconds or so.

Got the tractor split in half today (a major scare) and the motor accessories stripped off. The machine shop owner had a son coming back from a field repair of farm equipment stop by and took the motor in for disassembly he wanted to do the teardown since he was doing the hot tank some kind of thermal caustic cleaning & all machine work. He suggested Lubriplate as assembly lube. I haven't really got in depth on the rebuild yet & I'm not sure that I can use the drill motor method to prelube with the distributor shaft to oil pump. Seeing how this engine used Gas to start the motor then switched over to Diesel when it was warmed up.
