Can someone tell me where the coolant drains are on my 06' 5. 9 block. I have been all over the place under the engine and can't seem to find any.

Thanks

I'd like to know what engines do have "coolant drain plugs" in the block. Thats definately a new one... ...

I've never NOT found them on any gas engine I've looked for them on. I've worked on a lot and seen them on a lot of engines.

All the small block chevys (1955 through 1990's iron block) had one 1/4 pipe plug with a 9/16 hex head on each side of the block that you could drain all the coolant out of each bank. They were in the middle of the block between cylinders 3 & 5 on the left bank and cylinders 4 & 6 on the right bank a couple of inches above where the oil pan bolted up to the block.

I think the big blocks, 366 thru 454 did also but I can't remember for sure about those.

Small block Mopars had them also. I learned about them on my Chevy from my Mopar buddy.

I used to install radiator drain cocks in place of the plugs so that I was still able to drain the block after a few years. Sometimes those pipe plugs would seize in there. That makes a coolant flush sooooo much easier!

Yeah, they used to have petcocks on them too, I bet some enterprising employee probably got to park in the front of the lot a week for his/her suggestion to eliminate the drain valve and lower the cost (to the company) of building the auto/truck. bg

my 02 4Runner had them (3rd gen) and my 94' Vette had them, my 66' BB had them as well as my 89' BB chevy truck... That's why I was inquiring about my CTD... but the lower rad hose it is...

When draining the block by pulling the bottom hose, does all the fluid drain out?

Would you get more out if the rear was higher than the front?

Just curious.

Ray

I don't remember where I read it but somewhere on this website is a detailed step by to step to ensure total vacating of the block and replacement with fresh coolant. I printed it when I found it. Am going to do this fall.
