I finally have my engine back from the mchine shop and reassembling it. Which way does the block heater go in? FSM just says, remember which way it came out:confused: That was a year ago. So does the plug go above the allen screw, or below it? '98 12 valve engine heaters are different:mad:

Just checked the Phillips/Temro catalog.

That is installed correctly and would point the element down.

It's all good, man.

Mike. :)

Thanks Mike, I knew someone would know the answer.

Harvey, . 020 oversize on the cylinders, crank journals were just polished. The guy said I had a very solid block, so if I go another 800k I could go to . 040 :D

That's quite impressive when you pause to consider that engine had over 700,000 mostly working miles on it, was mildly modified, and only needed a . 020 overbore.

When I hear facts like that I take them as even more proof that the mighty Cummins is so far ahead of the so-called competition the Furds and GMs are not even in the game.

My guess is, if . 010 oversize was offered, it would have worked. And someone in another thread said the 5. 9 was a throw-away block... .

I think so too, but I didn't think to ask. It does go to show that visible crosshatch is not a good indicator of wear. It was the bottom of the cylinders that were out of spec. I hope they aren't throw aways. I have a '98 engine I will need to get rid of soon.
