Does anyone make an engine brake for the 5. 9?

Also, does anyone make an exhaust brake with a variable butterly valve? Seems like this would be a real handy setup to be able to control the braking power.

Pac Brake is about to intoduce an improved exhaust brake for the 5. 9... . it will us new patented technology that will give better performance at lower engine speeds... . Their now filling orders for IH, CAT for some other engines with release of the exhaust brake for the 5. 9 very soon... . Remember that if you exceed the back pressure requirements the exhaust valve can open at the wrong time... and crunch it on the top of the piston... .

If you take the square inches of the head of the valve... lets say its 2 1/2" diameter... . using a math formula... . Radius squared time pie..... times a max of 60 PSI means that there is about 300 pounds trying to open the valve... . NOT 300 PSI but 300 lbs of pressure on the back of the valve.....

Some engines in the way they are designed can't handle an engine brake... All engine brakes require an attachment to the head that allows for opening and closing of the exhaust valve at the correct time to use higher pressures than an exhaust brake...

Most small CAT and IH engines as well at the 5. 9 are poor designs for an engine brake so only exhaust brakes are used... . some engines don't do well with an exhaust brake... the guys that build the engines have to have the use of exhaust brakes or engine brakes in mind when the engine is designed...

The new Dorf 6. 0 was such an engine... the engineers said up front that it shouldn't have an exhaust brake so pacbrake decided not to go there...

Hope this helps... ...

Hey Jim, don't forget the COMPLEXITY factor with the engine brake! Or the noise and bulk. :) Didn't know about the 6. 0 exhaust brake ban. Let's see... Faster UP hill, and slower DOWN hill... :D

CJ- I envy your mileage!

Do you want something that you can adjust on the fly? I don't know if there's anything like that out there. BD's brake has a variable butterfly. If closes down more are lower rpm's. http://www.dieselperformance.com
