Can someone tell me if I can or cannot have and engine break on a 48RE ive heard you can and you cant Banks has one and was what gives? Do I need to change the tc vb or both or some kind of lock up controller looking for extreme reliability dont want to jack around with things that kind of work.

Yep, reccomended TC, VB, and add a BD actuator to ramp the TV pressure when activated. If you don't do it right it will eat the TC then the rest of the trans.

In factory stock condition you CANNOT use an exhaust brake on your truck.

When you lift your right foot from the accelerator pedal at highway speed your 48RE automatic has only a very loose coupling to the driveshaft. It freewheels completely or the torque converter drags loosely and slips as the truck slows, much like putting the shifter in neutral when slowing on a manual transmission.

If you install an exhaust brake of any brand it will slow the engine but the driveshaft will continue spinning the output shaft of your 48RE which will quickly generate significant heat and burn up the torque converter.

The only way to use an exhaust brake in any Dodge Ram 47RE or 48RE prior to '06 is to have the transmission modified to provided torque converter lockup everytime the exhaust brake is activated. You can have a major transmission rebuild and upgrade to provide lockup or you can have an aftermarket device installed that will create lockup. I don't have experience with the aftermarket devices so have no information to offer.

I own a 04. 5 and watched a thread for quite a while on the jacobs brake testing and were in communication to a engineer who was overseeing the interface. The bottom line was 04. 5 and 05 didn't have enough ram in the computer for the software download and the 04. 5 was sketchy if it had a thrust bearing installed for the reverse torque of the engine. There are manufacturers building torque converter lockup boxes that should interface with the exhaust brake still nothing is a guarantee. I won't do it till I rebuild the trans and put the "trick" stuff in. Good luck

We'll you can't have it both ways, the correct installation would be TC/VB with lock up device,if the trans is not in like new condition???? Banks commander with TV operator works well. My personal setup is PRXB with complete Trans with Banks TV operator 03/04. 5
