Engine check light came on - 4 wheel drive system unavailable

I was driving up my street stopping at each house this evening. I would put it in park, hop out, stick a paper in the mail box, jump back in, put in drive... rinse & reapeat. One time, I put it in drive and the transmission made a big clunk, the engine symbol lit on the dash and it drove like it was starting in 3rd gear. I shut it off and then restarted. I got a “4 wheel drive system not currently available “ message . In Drive it seems like 3rd gear. Reverse seems normal except for the clunk when engaging.

Yikes, not this weekend...

Any suggestions?

Oops, my signature still had my old truck. I fixed it

I traded the 1500.
I have a 2015 Longhorn 3500 SRW Cummins, Aisin, 4x4 , SB, Crew Cab in White.

First disconnect the batteries and wait for 15 min to drain the system, then reconnect.
Might it is just a bug that clears itself after a rebooting.

I’d suggest you get the codes pulled.......ANYTHING else is pure and simple GUESSING at this point.

i had a 2016 6.4 2500. after i had the recall of the transmission solenoid pack fixed after that, i got that same message on occasion. thankfully, i traded the 16 hemi for a new 18 cummins 2500 with a g56. enjoying the 5 more mpg and the manual trans now. cheers comrades!
