I only have 1500 miles on the new red beast and I have noticed it never seems to crank the same amount before starting. In the mornings just a few cranks and it is running. If I shut it off to run into Home Depot or something and come out to fire it up it seems to crank probably twice as long before starting. Maybe this is normal and I'm still used to my 01 that fired on the first no matter what. Just seems like it would be more consistant.

Other than that I am very happy with it. First tank of fuel was 20. 17 mpg calculated by hand. Mixed driving anywhere from stop and go to go like he!!. Very happy with that. The overhead has the average over the 1500 miles at 18. 8 mpg. I am very happy with these numbers considering it has a lot of breaking in to do.

Ours does the same thing; I believe I have seen it mentioned here before as well. May relate to fueling changes due to sensors being heated or??? But I can confirm that ours is the same.

Mine does the same thing .

In the morning real quick, and if i run in to a store seems a little longer. im only averaging 18mpg though . congrats on the new truck!!

On the new trucks, remember that we have computers running the engines now. The reason for not getting consistent starts is because the computer has to read the crank and cam positions sensors first. Unlike our older trucks where we had mechanical gears to tie everything together, we now have senors doing that work.

Mine does the same thing and as a matter of fact I sometimes even get a "puff" of black smoke if I let go of the key before it fires on a long crank and then crank it again.

Might have something to do with the engine oil being cold and "thiick" and hot and thin. High cold pressure and low hot pressure.

I get the same puff of black smoke if I let off the key before it cranks then recrank it. It's only stubborn about cranking after it has been ran and it good and hot. I have noticed that if I just crank on the starter till it cranks it does not black smoke.

In the mornings it cranks right up.

This is kinda weird. I would think that a hot engine would crank easier than a cold engine.

I suspect it is fueling a hot engine lean on purpose. This will probably be one for a future software load.

Cranky

Mine will crank real hard every once in a while, but more often now. Only when hot and only when shut off for short periods. Sometimes I crank for 20 secs or more to fire, and it'll stumble before firing. Gotta a mechanic at the Hollister dealer goin to a Cummins class this week gonna ask about this. Will post findings!

PS - no codes, checked that out

Same Same here, its intermittent but when it does decide to experience a longer crank time it is when its warm- engine has been running that day. It doesn't bother me except that it sometimes "fakes" me out in that I hold the key for the usual amount of time and then let up to experience a no start and then I think whats up with that:confused:

I would bet that a software update on this issue will be on the way. All the sensors, computer and such see everything in milliseconds so I wouldn't blame the hardware used.
