Some of you may remeber my 911 post. I had a semi jacknife in front of me in WY... . only to have the front of my truck kiss the rear of the semi trailer.

Good news, the body work is going well. Should see the paint booth next week.

The bad news and the question. I had to run the motor dry on coolant to get off the highway. The interstate was too icy to stand up on... let alone share with semi's sliding all over. Any way I had to travel about 8 miles with the water pump barely spinning... and a gusher of a radiator leak. The good part... it was about 5 deg F with 20mph winds... . REALLY cold. The bad part... . I almost pegged the temp guage getting out of trouble.

If this were a gas motor I'd look for oil consumption and check the compression.

***What and how can we check the internal health of our diesel motors?*****

I'm sure the concepts are the same but the procedures are different.

Thanks ahead of time for your thoughts guys.

I'll try to post a picture of the damage here next.

damage picts

Here's picts of the damage for your viewing pleasure.

More good news... I get a Reflexxion Hood for the same price as the replacement.....

Hope the perfectly running engine is still there when we start it this week.

Cheers,

Gill

PS ... GET A BRUSH GUARD

I probably didn't have the toughest brush guard (Go Rhino) on my truck but it probably saved my cheese... .

Without out it the collision would have wiped out my fuel pump and probably brakes too. As it turned out the motor still ran... albeit with a huge hole in the radiator/intercooler... . but at least I was able to get out of trouble.

Our trucks have a real achilles heel right above the bumper... . as in lots of protection at the bumper and almost none above it... except plastic.

Just a thought.

:{ :{ :{

We had a super windstorm happening & the side of mine stopped a shopping card, just as it was breaking into light speed. :{ But it wasn't close to yours. :--)

I couldn't agree more ... perfect opportunity to replace stock items with aftermarket wherever possible. You got the hood, intercooler comes to mind.

Darn if it somehow damaged the turbo. :D

I doubt you hurt anything. My buddy used to move his truck around with no radiator all the time. That motor is in another truck now and runs high 13's.

Not sure what you would check though. Just offering a little assurance. :)

Gitchesum... I like your optimism... .

Hope you're right... . should be. The crankcase stayed full the whole time with lotso fresh rotella.

Forest... My thoughts exactly. .

Trying to figure out how I need a new set of injectors? Or have my timing "checked"

Cheers,

Gill

I wouldn't expect to see any damage. Nearly pegging the temp guage and getting it shut down won't hurt anything. I was driving in the mountains out west, pulling a small but heavy trailer with a bad fan clutch. We were in Custer State Park, speeds were low and grades steep. I pegged the engine and trans temp guages, let it cool down (we were almost to the summit) and continued our trip with no problems. That was 2 1/2 years ago.

You can tell a lot with a simple compression test. If it got too hot and you scuffed a piston or stuck a ring, you'll see it then. There is a slight possability you damaged the head gasket or warped the head (which a cold compression test can sometimes miss), but I doubt that happened.

Good Luck,

Joe

Usually on I-6's I work on, when they overheat and start getting hurt, one of the cylinders gets scored. When this happens it is usally acompanied by high blowby, low power, and usually a knock or definite rattle, and it will run hot.

The other problem may be a head gasket. As long as coolant doesn't end up in the pan, or oil in the radiator, you're probably good to go.

I hope for the best. I also was hoping your truck would be home by now. Did you get moved to where you were going? I hope you got help for the guys here! Oh by the way you need a grill guard like mine from ruenel manufacturing!

Michael

I dunno- getting it that hot is bound to have taken the temper out of your torque plate & softened the springs in your GSK- I'd get a stronger plate & a 4k GSK just to be on the safe side. :D

Thanks Bill.....

I'll quote you when I pass this off on the "Sheriff of the checkbook" (She's quite a lady... she's making sure we send our kids to college).

MMiller... . yup we made it. Quite the adventure. Met some real nice people in Evanston Wy. Ron and Roy Lester. They ranch locally and during the winter months deliver RV's (Hotshots) for the local RV dealers. Nevertheless they had a flatbed for my truck (Ok nobody cancel my TDR membership but it was pulled by a 6. 0 Ferd) and another truck to pull my RV. More money than I was planning on spending for the move... . but with nobody hurt and all my stuff under one roof again, I shouldn't complain.

Cheers everybody,

Thanks for the kind words.
