Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Front seal question

Hi Gearheads,

I drive a 1998. 5 24 valve 4x4 5 speed manual shift LWB. It has gages, Horton fan, Pac brake, a carter push pump as well as the stock pump. It also has a fuel pressure light that comes on at less than 5psi. It has no HP upgrades. I have owned it since new and it has 96500 miles on it, half of them towing miles. Never has given me a problem until tonight.

I fueled up and took a drive in the country. 50 to 55 mph. 58 miles after fill up I came to a stop sign and as I was comming to a stop I put in the clutch and it died. It will not start. Cranks fast but no start. I opened the water dump at the filter and only fuel came out. I turn on the key and I hear the fuel pumps working and the fuel pressure light goes out but it won't start, only crank. By the way the check engine light did not come on and is not on except for the first few seconds when it checks itself.

I have had the fuel pressure light only for the last 6 months, 4 or 5 thousand miles but it has never lit up while the engine was running. I don't think I have ever starved the V44 fuel pump. I put the extra pump and light on it "Just to be safe"

Any ideas on what it could be? Help.

I had the same thing happen to my 01 last weekend. No codes. It was the vp44. Have you had a dead pedal or a rough idle or hard start?

When this happened to me I wasn't sure it was the vp44. But I had had a rough idle once and awhile that week so I just changed it. Luckly it was the problem.

I have not had dead pedal or a rough idle or hard start. It just died and won't start. You say lucky it was a vp44?? How is that lucky? It is major bucks isn't it?

I don't know how to retreve codes. The check eng light did not came on. How do you check codes?

Turn your key on (run position)/off 3 times and watch your odometer for codes.

you say you just fueled up? about once a week i have someone bring a pump to my shop with your same complaint. and the pump is full of gas, not fuel. check the easy things first.

You need a code reader for a 98. 5 I am pretty sure. I don't think you can do the key thing.

I thought of the fuel too but he ran like 50 miles before it died so I Figured it wasn't fuel. It sure woudn't hurt to check it though. Take a sample out if the fuel filter in a clear bottle.

I too, would like to know if turning off the key 3 times will produce codes on the odo on the 98. 5. I have never tried it, and would like to be prepared in the future. I bought this truck new and just turned 40,000 miles a couple week ends ago. Thank you!

Thanks Greg, The only thing is I drove it 58 miles after fill up. But I will check the fuel comming out of the filter to be sure.

98.5 codes

There is no way to check the engine codes on a 98. 5-99 or (00?)When you do the 3 on key deal all you do is erase the light because you have cycled the engine 3 times. The codes are still in the computer but the light will go out. The only way to see the codes is to get them with a reader. on a 01-02 trucks you can do the 3 on key deal and get the codes to scroll across the millage screen. I am not 100% sure on a 00. AutoZone and Advance Auto will read the codes for free in my area.

Thank you! Would you happen to know what type of electronic reader is required. And where can I purchase one. Does Summit Racing carry these? Thanks again for the help.

If you take a sample from the filter ,place a small amount on a safe area and try to light it with a match or lighter, if it burns ,its got gasoline in it If it will not burn its Diesel ,If it full of water that could be your problem. Ron Bissett in Metro Louisville KY

Injection Pump

My truck did the same thing when the injection pump went out. Parked it in a parking lot it was running fine. Came out and it wouldn't start. Starter turned it fast enough just wouldn't start. Had about 93,000 miles on it. I had a code reader and was getting the code that said the injection pump was going. Didn't believe it because the truck was running so well; until I had to have it towed.

I was searching forum and came across this thread. I went outside this morning cranked 'ole blue and she idled for approx 7-8 seconds then shutdown. I tried to cranked her again but only fast crank no attempt to fire. It was 59 degrees this morning, not cold. I emptied the water dump and turned the key. The fuel pumped hummed and cycled off. She still would not crank. I left her for 2 hours and came back, still she won't crank. She is a 98. 5 24vavle 4x4 267k miles and paid for. Any suggestions what is sickness ?

Nobody never replied. I did find out what it was. The return line from the injectors developed a slight crack. It was getting air in the system and loosing prime. I replaced the line and all is well. thanks for asking
