Hi

I also posted this on the 24v eng trans board. My truck is on the side of the road 50 miles from home. Here is the info.

I drive a 1998. 5 24 valve 4x4 5 speed manual shift LWB. It has gages, Horton fan, Pac brake, a carter push pump as well as the stock pump. It also has a fuel pressure light that comes on at less than 5psi. It has no HP upgrades. I have owned it since new and it has 96500 miles on it, half of them towing miles. Never has given me a problem until tonight.

I fueled up and took a drive in the country. 50 to 55 mph. 58 miles after fill up I came to a stop sign and as I was comming to a stop I put in the clutch and it died. It will not start. Cranks fast but no start. I opened the water dump at the filter and only fuel came out. I turn on the key and I hear the fuel pumps working and the fuel pressure light goes out but it won't start, only crank. By the way the check engine light did not come on and is not on except for the first few seconds when it checks itself.

I have had the fuel pressure light only for the last 6 months, 4 or 5 thousand miles but it has never lit up while the engine was running. I don't think I have ever starved the VS4500 fuel pump. I put the extra pump and light on it "Just to be safe"

Any ideas on what it could be? Help.

Chris

Check the clutch switch to see if it is working properly making and braking when engaged the ECM could not be seeing a change of state. ??? did you check your fuel supply? at the filter. at the pump you may have an air leak ing into the fuel. Are you getting fuel out of injectors 1,3,4 ? Have forgot what else you said and hope this helps.

Chris,

Is the fuel solenoid operating properly? If it's stuck in the OFF position, obviously your truck won't run.

Have someone else crank the truck while you make sure the solenoid opens.

If it doesn't, it could be caused by a mechanical problem or an electrical problem. Some basic troubleshooting should lead you to the culprit.

Good luck,

Loren

Thank you Loren and everybody else. I replaced the VP44 today and it is running fine again. My hat is off the John I think it was, who said changing the pump is only a three or four hour job. It took me much longer. Maybe next time I can do it in under a day.

Thanks again
